The United States Army was established in 1775 as the Continental Army and served in various campaigns and wars until 1846. The California Battalion of the 11th Regiment, a unit of the New York militia, was organized on December 10, 1847 at Palmdale, California. At the time it was one of only two volunteer battalions in the state. The battalion had been raised by Captain Benjamin Foulke (1812-1885) to fight against Mexico during its war for independence from Spain. In 1850, when California became a state, the battalion joined with other units to form the 1st Infantry Regiment and fought in several engagements against Mexican forces before disbanding on November 15, 1851. In 1865, when San Francisco became an independent city, Captain Foulke's battalion reorganized as part of Mayor Joseph Rolph's First Municipal Brigade effective January 1st 1865 and participated in that city's defense against Confederate attacks. The battalion again reformed on February 14th 1870 as Company A (Foley’s Battalion No. 2) of Company B (First American Volunteer Infantry), 3rd Regimental Militia Infantry Corps stationed at Fort Tejon under Colonel George Wetherbee (1825-1900). On May 5th 1870 President Ulysses S Grant ordered all regular army troops throughout California to prepare for a possible Invasion of Mexico by General Anza Expedition led by General Winfield Scott Woodbury which never occurred but did cause some tension among Californians over military preparedness and donations to such organizations as Cal Ammy Legionals from Palmdale citizens who believed their donations were being used for purposes other than defense or aiding civilian efforts. On September 9 1860Captain John Capps(1819-1920)of Company A (Foley’s Battalion No2) died while fighting at Yuma River Arizona Territory under General Crook who had assumed command after Lieutenant Colonel James Halleck’s death at Battle Of La Mesa March 16th 1861; his body was returned home with full honors due him including burial near his family home on October 6 1860 following a public ceremony attended by Governor Goodwin Earle.(See next entry.) After Captain Capps' death his company mourned several months before finally disbanding on December 12 1860 without any further action taken formalizing their disbanded status however they continued to exist informally through local celebrations known as "Capps' Day" until eventually dissolving completely sometime between 1862-1864.(See below entry.) This period saw growth in trucking companies such as Southern Pacific Railroad; movie theaters like Warner Bros.; chemical plants such as Refinery Chemical Company; automotive manufacturing firms like Buick Motor Company; and other heavy industrial sectors including power generation from coal mines and oil rigs.Today's economy is based on services such as healthcare services; research & development for new products; health care consulting; legal services; retail trade; transportation infrastructure developments including expressways connecting the cities with Silicon Valley (and points beyond) while also providing access to agricultural lands within commuting distance
