Palmdale, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 153,545. The Palmdale Historic District is a registered historic district in Palmdale and portions of Rancho Mirage. It contains over 160 buildings from the early 20th century through the 1960s.
The name "Palmdale" comes from Rancho Viejo de las Huelgas (Rancho Palm) on land that was given to José Gabriel María Báez by Don Pedro Menéndez Dominguez on 3 November 1821. José Gabriel María Báez named his rancho after his grandfather's estate in Madrid, Spain: La Huelga del Naranjal (the Battle of Naranjal). The area now known as Palmdale was part of Rancho Viejo de las Huelgas until it was annexed by Los Angeles County on 6 January 1888.
In 1892 W. Kip Ladd founded the Ladd Paper Company in what is now Downtown Los Angeles and began producing pulpwood for paper production. In 1909 he sold his interest in Ladd Paper to JB Boyd & Co., which continued to produce lumber until 1920 when it merged with sawmills controlled by John Sutter to form the Sutter Paper company which still produces lumber today. The Palmdale Valley was first settled in the early 1800s by Mexicans. The area now includes Palmdale and much of eastern Riverside County. The valley became a center for cotton production after it was discovered in the late 18th century by José Maria de la Sala y Pavón, one of Spanish settlers who traveled through the area on his way to Tulare County. In 1851, William Halleck built a limekiln in what is now downtown Palmdale, which supplied palmitate (a type of lime) for use in making plaster and other building materials.
In 1865, California State Senator John Wickersham established a political precinct here that became known as "Wickershamville." Wickersham was an important advocate for western settlement and played a significant role in helping to create Southern California. He also served as mayor of Los Angeles from 1868 to 1870.
After Wickersham's death, his son George Washington Wickerham took over his father's career at the state senate. From 1901 until he died in 1943, George Washington Wickerham was Californio president of Mexico City University (MUCU). His wife Gertrude served as chancellor from 1923 until her death in 1973. They were both highly influential figures within Mexican American politics during this time period.
During World War II, local businesses helped provide munitions supplies to the war effort and made immense contributions to postwar reconstruction efforts in southern California. Many Palmdale businesses continue to operate today- such as ABC Corporation (formerly KABC-TV), Dell Computer Corporation (former Dell Inc.), HP Pavilion pavilion products and parts company, ITT Educational Services Company (ITT EDL), Motorola Solutions Company (MSC), Jardine & Mathews Limited Partnership (J&M), Pacific Gas & Electric Company PG&E (PG&E), Sleepy Hollow Tobacco Co., Ltd.(SLTC) .
On October 15, 1848, the first post office in Palmdale opened with a population of just five people. The town was named for Major David Palmdale who served as a United States Army officer during the Mexican-American War.
The first business in town was a grocery store and later became a feed market. By 1879, there were seven businesses in town and over 100 residents.
In 1905, the Palmdale–Santa Clarita Railway was built through the town and it soon became an important transportation artery. In 1916, the Palmdale–Ontario County Airport was established and remains one of the busiest airports in Southern California today.
