The Palmdale Californian (Volume IX, Issue XIV, July 14, 1901) was a weekly newspaper published in Palmdale, California. It was founded by John W. Woolridge and became the first daily paper in the city on February 2, 1892. The paper ceased publication on October 15, 1907. The first issue of the "Los Angeles Times" was published in 1881 with room for six pages. In 1902 it moved to one page per day and ultimately to one sheet of paper. On May 6th 1903 the "Los Angeles Times", with its new two-page size, went into general circulation and began publishing at five A.M.. The printing press which had been used to produce only four issues of "The Californian" ceased operations on November 30th 1907 because of financial difficulties brought about by World War I and then by an economic depression that followed the war.
In 1887, the first post office in Palmdale was established. The population of Palmdale then was only about 50 people. In 1912, the town became a city and its first mayor was C.E. "Doc" Smith.
