From its inception in the early 1800s, the maritime industry in Palmdale was a major force in the community. The city's success as an importer and distributor of goods from around the world made it a natural center for marine gift history. The first commercial mariners to explore and trade along California's Central Coast were men of fortune looking for new land to farm and expand their businesses. They brought with them their own fleets of vessels, which became known as whaling ships. In 1849, when Capt. Folsom founded Folsom Wharf on San Miguel Island in anticipation of the expected gold rush, he organized what would become one of California's most influential maritime organizations-the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). The PMA helped define both Palmdale's economy and its role within California society. It also played an important role in developing international trade between America and Europe through its affiliation with The Hague Convention on laws Applicable to Ships passing through the Sea Of Japan. This event is generally considered to be Palmdale’s founding moment as a port town. In addition to its significant contribution to local commerce, the PMA also playfully marketed itself as “the best place to buy anything you can find at any price”-an allusion that continues today as one of PMA’s key marketing strategies. By 1900,Palmdale had developed into an accomplished harbor town with multiple shipyards and warehouses capable of accommodating global shipping requirements. As container shipping began becoming popular throughout North America during this time period,PMA signaled Palmdale’s preference for being at the forefront of this growing industry by establishing a subsidiary called Marine Terminal Services Incorporated (MTSI). MTSI was responsible for providing container terminals across North America with efficient loading/unloading docks, storage areas, water tanks and other associated infrastructure necessary for cargo handling operations ashore or afloat. During World War II,MTSI built two massive naval stores depots at Stockton and Long Beach-one on Stockton Peninsula and one near Huntington Beach-designed specifically to accommodate American military needs during wartime(). These facilities quickly became iconically known as "The Big 3" because they accommodated more than three times the number of vehicles per square mile than any other U.S.-based military depot until WWII! Additionally, MTSI participated actively in civilian war production including supplying munitions components needed by Boeing Aircraft Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Los Angeles Times Company pulp presses used by United States Army Air Forces pilots training out over El Toro Field," wrote historian Don Armstrongusk in his book History Of The PMA: A Summary And Critical Assessment.) Postwar years saw continued growth for Palmdale merchants related both to economic development within our city proper but also expanding services offered outside our borders such as those provided by MTSI including compliance assistance with various government regulations governing ocean trading practices; customs clearance; vessel insurance; Global Positioning System technology support; real estate management; fisheries research.; health care services….towards today’s complex mergers & acquisitions!

The Palmdale Marine Museum was opened in 1933. In the early 1940s, the Palmdale Chamber of Commerce established a fund to purchase and care for what they called "the most important collection of marine objects in California." The collection included more than 100 items from around the world. The museum moved to its current location in 1949 and has been growing ever since. Today, the Palmdale Marine Museum consists of over 350 items from throughout themarine world, including rare artifacts from ancient civilizations and cultures as well as modern collections.
In 1847, when Californios began migrating to the new state, they brought with them their traditional way of life – agriculture and ranching. The Palmdale area was first settled in 1851 by Mexicans who had come overland from Mexico City. They named their land Rancho Palmdale because of the palm trees that grew there. The town of Palmdale was founded in 1892 by my father, William H. Dodge. It became a manufacturing center for televisions and other electronics products during the late 1990s and 2000s boom times. Today, it is home to a variety of businesses and homes, including Apple Inc., Google Inc., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and many more high-tech startups. But it’s not just Silicon Valley that has drawn people to Palmdale; there are also great wine properties located here as well as some interesting antique shops and galleries available on short strolls through the communities nearby.

The Palmdale area, located in the central valley of California, has a rich history. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were the Spanish, who named it Rancho Viejo after their original land grant of 2,000 acres. The area was later claimed by the United States because of its strategic location as an important transportation hub on the Central Valley routes between Sonoma and Marin counties. In 1848, American Commodore John C. Fremont sailed up the Sacramento River from San Francisco and discovered gold when he landed at what is now known as Point Reyes National Seashore. This led to hordes of Americans descending on this new discovery, which quickly turned into a gold rush era for Palmdale and other areas in the Central Valley. The first mills in Palmdale were built around 1850 by James Waddell and others with help from General George Armstrong Custer during his West Coast Campaign against Mexican forces that had invaded California. This period also saw growth in agriculture due to irrigation systems brought over from Mexico and establishment of citrus trees as a key crop in California’s fruit industry. With such success came social unrest among Anglo-American settlers who desired greater control over local resources than did their Mexican counterparts. By 1865, much of what is now Palmdale had been developed including fashionable clothing stores such as Gilead Brothers Clothing Company (now Macy’s) and Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America’s largest department stores at that time. In 1915, construction began on Interstate 5 which would connect Los Angeles with San Francisco via the Central Valley region; Palmdale was then bypassed completely for many years until it was included within I-5’s network in 1997. Today, Palmdale remains an important center for trade and commerce within Southern Californian counties such as Riverside County and Orange County while also experiencing rapid development due to its proximity to various metropolitan areas across Northern California
The Palmdale region in Southern California was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The town of Palmdale was founded on a large salt lick in 1848, and became an important transportation center for central California. The town was originally named "Napa" after the Napa Valley wine grape variety, but it changed its name to Palmdale because of the increased influence of Rancho Santa Anita heirs in nearby Livermore County. In 1932, president Franklin D. Roosevelt visited western California during hiscampaign for re-election. His speech at Golden Gate Park called for more public spending on education and housing projects throughout the country. In response, local businessman John Pritzker donated money to build a new high school and library in Palmdale. The facility opened in 1933, and has been used as a middle school, high school, and now community college ever since.
