Palmdale is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 73,569 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after Riverside and the ninth most populous city in California. Palmdale is also one of nine cities that make up the Claremont–Arroyo Hills Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Palmdale were Spanish traders and Missionaries who founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís on December 12, 1821. The town site chosen for this mission was near present-day Interstate 5 and Saugus Road. The first post office opened in 1827 under the name of Rancho Palmdale; it changed its name to Rancho Los Alamos on November 15, 1840. In 1907, Mayor John Cavanagh proposed that a new community be developed around what is now known as downtown Palmdale; this proposal was approved by the City Council with an land value of $2 million dollars ($ when adjusted for inflation). Downtown became a vibrant community with many small businesses and restaurants before becoming a major shopping center with stores such as Macy's (1918), JCPenney (1929), Sears Roebuck & Co.(1941), Kmart(1965), Disneyland (1987) and more recentlyChipotle Mexican Grill(2015). In recent years there has been development along I-5 including efforts to revive downtown business areas like Seventh Street between Sixth Avenue and Harrison Street which have failed but are being eyed again for redevelopment as part of Project Flywheel which would add high-end retail space across seven blocks from downtown into 2020. On May 9th 1905 when Pershing Square was dedicated as America's first open air movie theater marquis located just northeast of downtown on Pershing Boulevard about 2/3 mile east of current day Interstate 5 IMAX Theatre complex began operations exhibiting silent films until 1927 - still operating today!
The Palmdale, California region was first populated in the late 19th century by Anglo- Californians. The area now includes portions of Los Angeles and Orange counties. The town of Palmdale was founded in 1887 by U.S. Army Colonel James Irvine and his wife, Mary Bogan Irvine. They named their new community after a small but picturesque mountain range located east of Los Angeles. TheIrvine family operated a ranch there until the early 1920s when they sold it to John Drexel, who turned it into one of Southern California's most successful citrus industry concerns. In 1928, Drexel moved his business to Riverside County and renamed it "Drexel Citrus." However, during World War II AA bombs were dropped on the city; as a result, many Of Drexel's orange trees were destroyed including those that had been used forOranges at the Hollywood Bowl Racetrack.[1]
