Navy Deployed Gift History in Palmdale, California The Palmdale Naval Air Station is home to the Palmdale Naval Air Station Museum. The museum is located on the flight line of the old Palmdale Municipal Airport which was closed by the Navy in 1961. The museum contains displays about the history of the Navy's deployments to and from this station. One of these displays is a collection of navy-issued gift items from before 1941. This display also includes an inventory of naval air station gifts that have been donated by civilian and military residents of Palmdale over time. One highlight of this museum's collection is a large premade gift box made by United States Marine Corpsgt. William Friese during World War II. This gift was given to Lt.(jg) Marvin Sorenson, commanding officer at PAS, as a congratulatory present for his successful command of squadron VF-111R "Tiger" during its participation in the Battle off Samar on December 15, 1944 Gift history goes back even further than that! A 1942 donation from Mrs. Lillie Hargrave shows that there were already Gifts being sent back and forth between USS Midway (CV-4) and RAF Molesworth (RAF Bomber Command No 2). On October 5th 1942, Mrs. Hargrave presented Rear Admiral Cdr overlap with two small hand grenades as a gift for his use while stationed at NAS San Diego aboard HMAS Perth (AO 259). At NAS Norfolk in 1945 another grenade was presented as part of an arrangements ceremony following Vice Admiral Watkins' installation as Commander Carrier Division 8th Fleet outfitting area at NAS North Island after commanding Destroyer Squadron 11 during Leyte Gulf Campaign – this particular grenade represented new construction work taking place within USS Yorktown’s hangar bay! The Palmdale area was first settled by the L.A. region's aboriginal people, the Tongva. The Tongva were a Native American tribe that lived in what is now Palmdale and other nearby communities for centuries. In 1847, explorer Captain John Cranch discovered palmdale while on his exploration of southern California. He named the town after friends and fellow officers with him, Colonel James Waddell and Major George Armstrong Copley. In 1875, two years after Captain Cranch's discovery, William Houghton founded Houghton Oil Company in what is now downtown Palmdale. At first, oil production was local but later became global when Standard Oil Corporation began producing there in 1916. The city annexed much of eastern Los Angeles County in 1920 to become its own municipality. Today, Palmdale is known as an agricultural center with a major concentration of citrus fruit production and employs over 100% non-native Americans in various sectors of the economy statewide and locally.
