Flynn became Commanding Officer (CO) USAAF Station (later RAF station) Northampton in England. At that time, President Harry Truman announced plans for Operation Overlord which would see Allied forces invading Nazi Germany. Lt Col Flynn was tasked with purchasing gift items for General Dwight D Eisenhower so that he could enjoy life at Northampton during this challenging time. Many items were purchased such as cigars and whisky from local distilleries in order to celebrate English country living while still under occupation by Germany. These gifts helped give Eisenhower some much-needed relaxation during what was otherwise a trying period in his life

Palo Alto is a city in Northern California, United States. The population of Palo Alto was 97,362 as of the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in California and one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. Palo Alto has a rich history dating back to 1851, when it was part of Napa County. The name "Palo Alto" means "landing place near San Francisco". The City of Palo Alto was founded on December 4, 1851 by John Jony Ives as a merger of two small villages: Minna and Woodside. By 1860, there were over 50 residents living in what is now the downtown area; today it remains an largely white-collar community with few intruders. The first post office opened in 1871. In 1865, Antonio Menocal developed Alta Park and named it after his friend and mentor Charles Winton (1812-1892), who had emigrated from Spain to Mexico before becoming an American success story at Alta Californiana (the precursor to Stanford University). Menocal believed that Winton's presence would create a sense of civility and order within the new community; indeed, Winton donated land for Monterey Road (later renamed Hwy 101) which served as its main commercial artery. In 1881, William Mercer bought 20 acres north of town for $3500 which he used as pasture for his horses and cattle until 1888 when he built the firstadobe building on what is now Mill Valley Boulevard; this building still stands today. In 1886 private developer Roy Roberts purchased 10 acres east of town from Mercer for $6000; this land later became known as Roberts Rancho Santa Fe National Monument #2 (now Chatsworth Reservoir). In 1889 Roberts built himself a new home at 1150 North El Camino Real – one of Palo Alto’s earliest homespun brick buildings – which still stands today outside the boundaries of present-day Google Campus

The first Europeans to visit Palo Alto were Spanish missionaries in the early 17th century. The area was part of Alta California, and the missions were a means for separating Indians from more hostile indigenous groups. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1776, and the mission district extended from Palo Alto to Middletown. After Mexican independence in 1821, California became part of the United States, and Palo Alto became a part of Santa Clara County. In 1881, both Palo Alto and Santa Clara Counties were consolidated into one unit, and Palo Alto remained a part of that unit until it was dissolved in 1994. In 1892, Stanford University began offering undergraduate degrees at what is now its School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In 1906, Forbes magazine named Palo Alto as one of America's " Hundred Greatest Cities". In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson designated it as a national science center on his New Deal program. That year also saw the opening of City Hall in downtown Palo Alto. American Telephone & Telegraph built its first telephone line here in 1922. Palo Alto has been home to many notable people over the years including: Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), Bill Gates (1988-2013), Sergey Brin (1985-present), Donald Ewing Bruce (1898-1974), John Latham Mead Jr.(1907-1983)
