The United States Armed Forces have been present in Palo Alto, California since 1846. The first military presence in the area was a small detachment of regulars under the command of Colonel George Burnett. In 1852, the first American post office was established in Palo Alto. The U.S. Army stationed artillery Battery #5 there to protect the town from Confederate forces during the Battle of Palo Alto on November 6,1882. On December 17, 1906, General John Pershing formally adopted Palo Alto as a municipally organized town with its own government and police force. At this time, there were only a few hundred people living in downtown Palo Alto and most of the population resided on or near West Tasman Drive and Menlo Avenue. By 1923, when troops began deploying for World War I, more than 10 thousand civilians had moved into downtown Palo Alto from all over Santa Clara County. By 1941, though Downtown still served as an important commercial center for local businesses and residents alike due to its location along Third Street between North Market Street and Menlo Avenue directly across from Stanford University's campus), many military installations had been erected throughout downtown including Fort Point Naval Shipyard (later renamed San Francisco Naval Shipyard), Montgomery Barracks (later renamed Fort Atkinson), and Camp Dowell (later renamed Fort Funston). However, it would be until 1943 that Patton's Third Army would come through town en masse for their historic Operation Overlord offensive which aimed to takerid Nazi-occupied Europe. As part ofOperation Market Garden - one ofthe largest Allied landings ever undertaken - much of Downtown Palo Alto lay abandoned as thousands of soldiers battled alongside British cavalry units leading up to and during the battle at Arnhem Bridge on September 15-17th 1945; however some buildings such as Patton's headquarters still stand today testifying to how an entire city could be abandoned while still being used by Soldiers during wartime`s most significant event/eventos

In 1881, John Dallagher purchased Rancho exclusive yonder (the present site of Palo Alto) in what is now downtown Palo Alto from José Joaquín Moraga for $5,000. In 1887, Dallagher donated land to Stanford University at Menlo Park for use as a campus site. The university bought more land throughout its history; today there are over 10 acres (40 hectares) on each side of Highway 101 between Menlo Park and Palo Alto.[2]

Many of today's buildings were built during this time including The First National Bank (now Jardine & Forbes), Pacific Electric Railway Station (now SamTrans Plaza), Hearst Tower (now Googleplex), and Telephone Company Building (now Comcast Place). The area around Allston Avenue became known as "The Village" due to its high concentration of businesses and residences near Lincoln Boulevard and South Street. The history of Palo Alto begins with the Mission Dolores Adobe, built in 1797 by Father José de la Cruz. Theadobe served as a mission for the Spanish Missions of San Francisco and Solano, until 1821. In 1825, the Mexican government transferred ownership of the missions to Santa Clara County. In 1847, an act of Congress established Palo Alto as a town in Alta California. The first postoffice was established in Palo Alto on October 16, 1850.
