A number of Palo Alto businesses have been in the military for as long as there has been an Army presence in the area. The first soldiers to arrive were Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 1st Cavalry Regiment, which arrived at Fort Point on December 17, 1847. In 1903, the United States Signal Corps was formed and Palo Alto Businessman and Mayor William S. Richardson donated a building on North Trust Street for the use of the corps. The Signal Corps moved out in 1954 and until recently their headquarters was located at West Valley College before being relocated to Ft Belvoir across from Washington National Cathedral. The Santa Clara Valley Veterans Affairs Medical Center also served as one of many hospital locations for troops during World War II and later Vietnam. In 1973, when Fort Bragg closed its gates after 25 years of service, all active duty military personnel were mustered out by local civilians and discharged without receiving any benefits or pensions from either side. As a result, most veteran families had to find other ways to provide support for their loved ones who had served our country in some capacity. In 1978, Dean Rusk became Secretary of Defense under President Jimmy Carter and he announced plans to reduce military spending by $500 billion over 10 years This caused much outcry throughout America due to what was perceived as high-handedness on the part of Reaganomics proponents. After several months of consideration it was decided that no changes would be made to Army base closure policy pending further research into how best to adapt these reductions elsewhere within DOD budget guidelines (i.e., not at Fort Bragg). On July 16th 1990 Lt Col John Dinges relieved MajGen Leroy Epps III with command of 3rd Infantry Division (Light) responsible for Fort Riley Kansas garrisoning 1st Armored Division elements pivotally situated at Wichita Falls Texas adjacent Columbia Minden Louisiana Barracks previously known asFort PolkLouisiana Barracks now home to UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter Maintenance Facility while 2nd Battalion Combat Team*, currently assigned Headquarters Company* is field operations battalion* concurrently deployed with 3rd Infantry Division (Light) I am so proud that my family can still wear my old Officer’s Medal around my neck! As we approach our centennial year it is interesting to reflect upon how events such as this one have shaped Palo Alto’s culture and economy over time – especially given that both areas are today considered bastions of liberalism where open discussion is encouraged among all walks of life despite political correctness becoming more prevalent each day everywhere else in society
