The Coast Guard has been a part of Palo Alto, California for over 120 years. The first Coast Guard detachment was stationed in the town in 1868. In 1918, the first station in Palo Alto open to the public. Today, there are four Coast Guard stations located throughout the city: One on Embarcadero Drive, one at Alameda Point Park, one at Masonic Temple and one on Hearst Avenue. In 1919, Governor Hiram Johnson established the San Francisco Township as an incorporated village with its own police department and fire department. On December 10 of that year, Mayor George Wernham approved a resolution by the Township requesting that it be granted full authority to operate its own municipal services pursuant to state law. The motion passed 9-0 with only Alderman James Fenton dissenting. This initial grant of autonomy would give San Francisco Township independence from City Hall and allow it more direct control over its finances and resources. On November 15th of 1920, Captain John Ahern arrived in Palo Alto with his new USCGC gig as Executive Officer of Station #1 (later renamed Station #2). He had come down from Hawaii on board USS "Peacemaker" after serving eight months as Commanding Officer of USS "Tarpon". His arrival created quite a stir in town because he was completely unknown to most people who were still living within walking distance of their homes back then! On October 5th 1928 - just two years after becoming a part of Palo Alto - Commodore Harry Leland Boucher became Commander-in-Chief United States Naval Forces Pacific Fleet based at Marine Barracks Pier 1 in San Francisco Bayview District when Rear Admiral William Halsey assumed command ashore during World War II. It wasn't until May 1945 that Boucher's Force became operational known as Task Group 58.2 which was responsible for guarding Japan's borders along the East coast while General Douglas MacArthur conducted amphibious operations in Okinawa Island area across from mainland Japan through June 1945; later this group sailed into Tokyo Bay under Japanese occupation under United States Forces Commander Yoshihide Suga relieved by Vice Admiral Chester Nimitz upon American surrender effective July 4th 1945 following Operation Overlord which ended Japanese Empire September 1st1945

The Coast Guard Station Palo Alto was founded on December 8, 1915, as the Headquarters and Depot of the County of Santa Clara. The station became a coast guard post in 1936. It was redesignated as the Coast Guard Station Palo Alto on March 12, 1942. On July 14, 1945, it became an Air Defense Command installation. The station became part of United States Coast Guard District 9 in 1966. In 1978 it absorbed the Harbor Patrol Unit which had been stationed at Municipal Pier 1 since 1935.

The act authorized the President of the United States to appoint a panel of five individuals to develop legislation with respect to matters relating to maritime safety and security. One such individual was Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, who served on the panel from 1919-1921. In 1921, Admiral Byrd directed that gifts be made in honor of then-Commanding Officer, Naval Station Puget Sound Grace Harbor - Seattle (now Tacoma). That year, Rear Admiral Byrd presented a gift consisting of an American flagstaff and two inscribed steamships - USS George Washington (PGW) and USS Constitution (CGN). The first commodore in command at Puget Sound Grace Harbor - Seattlereceived this gift for his services during World War I. The second commodore in command received this gift for his services during World War II.
