Palo Alto is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 54,763 at the 2010 census. It was founded on May 1, 1884 by Stanford University students as a small town named after Palo Alto Point on the Stanford Peninsula. The name derives from Spanish palo alto (tall palm). The first recorded mention of Palo Alto comes from an expedition led by Gaspar de la Portilla and Juan Bautista Correa towards Monterey Bay in 1776. An early inhabitant of the area were two families of Coast Miwoks who lived near what is now downtown Palo Alto and Mountain View before any European settlement occurred. One story has it that the local chief, Yanaus Canute, received news of British ships anchored off the coast of Santa Cruz County and decided to seek safety inland instead of allowing them to lay siege to his village. A second account claims that American Revolutionary War Captain John Hecuba saw a large tree in plain view on Mount Council while exploring southern San Francisco Bay Area during his 1807 visit; he called this tree "Palo Alto" because it looked like a tall white oak he had seen earlier in the voyage. Palo Alto residents voted in 1896 to place orange trees along El Camino Real as part of commemorating California's annexation into United States during their centennial year celebrations. The trees have continued to provide shade and inspiration for people living near Interstate 80 between Menlo Park and Palo Alto ever since. In 1906, when Stanford University moved its campus from nearby Eureka to Claremont Avenue just east of El Camino Real, parts of Palo Alto were included within the new university boundaries.
