The first marines deployed to Palo Alto, California in 1942 as part of World War II were the 9th Marines. The unit was stationed at Camp Pendleton and served on Guadalcanal. In 1916, the United States Marine Corps was founded as an infantry regiment. The first Marines served in World War I and were discharged in 1919. In 1933, the Marine Corps became a Service branch of the Department of Defense and was designated as the 1st Infantry Division. The division deployed to Europe in 1945, where they fought in the war against Japan. After the war, the division became activated again and deployed to Okinawa where they fought for six months before withdrawing. In 1952, marines were stationed at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base which later became known as Camp Pendleton. From there they participated in Operation Neptune's Spear which led to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il being captured and executed. In 1994, marines were stationed permanently at Djibouti after deployment there during Operation Restore Hope. Palo Alto is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 54,405 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located within the East Bay region of San Francisco. Palo Alto was founded in 1868 by former Governor John W. Sloat and six other citizens as a military post on land that had been donated by Major Jesse Livermore. The original town site was east of present-day downtown Palo Alto, between Parnassus Road and Bigelow Drive. The name "Palo Alto" honors José Altamira, who lived in nearby Willow Grove during the 1840s and 1850s. The first schools for students in Palo Alto were built at what is now Middle School Street and El Camino Real Avenue.
