The Palos Verdes Estates Air Force Base is home to the California Air National Guard's 5th Wing, which operates the A-10 Warthog aircraft. The wing was formed in 1951 and is headquartered at this airport. In 2017, the wing delivered a gift from the United Kingdom to the state of California. This gift was a C-130 Hercules transport plane that arrived at PALOS VERDES ESTATES AFB on October 3, 2017 as part of an international military outreach initiative by RAF Northolt in collaboration with other air forces throughout America. Named after General James "Sunny" Wright, Commander of Ninth Air Force during World War II and later Commanding General USAF Europe; this aircraft is one of only two examples ever built specifically for cargo transportation within NATO airspace. The other being a C-5 Galaxy donated by Boeing Co., manufacturer of both planes. Since its donation, the plane has been used for various promotional events across Southern California and has even made one trip to Las Vegas! The Wing will now be able to continue their outreach program by donating another C-130 Hercules to fly into Los Angeles International Airport on December 10th for a special performance at The Hollywood Bowl honoring top performers from around the world!

The City of Palos Verdes Estates (PV) is a census-designated place located in Marin County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,955. The city is adjacent to Menlo Park and San Mateo County. In addition to its annexed villages of Westwood and East Palo Alto, PV also includes portions of Pacific Heights and North Palo Alto. Founded in 1887 by Spanish settlers as Rancho Santa Cruz del Norte, Palos Verdes Estates became a city on December 1, 1914. The name "Palos Verdes Estates" is from an earlier land grant given by Spain to José Maria de Jesús Sepúlveda y Guevara for his rancho de la Mata at present-day Cypress Avenue and Mission Boulevard. On November 15, 1887 a group of seven men led by Hiram Sibley founded the town site on land they had purchased from Juan Bautista Alarcón east of Mission Bayou opposite what is now Menlo Park. In 1907 a new electric street railway was built through the town which quickly gained popularity as it ran along one side of Mission Bayou while providing easy access to shoppers at Midway Mall across the bay on State Street. By 1915 there were over 100 people living in Palos Verdes Estates with 2 restaurants, 10 stores and 50 homes. During World War II many military personnel lived within close proximity to Pacific Heights thanks to nearby Camp Pendleton (now Joint Base San Diego).
