The United States Army was first organized in 1775. The Palos Verdes Estates Regiment was formed on December 16, 1847, and served until the Vietnam War. The regiment was one of the first California National Guard units to serve in the Vietnam War. The Palos Verdes Estates Regiment lost its status as a regiment in 1958 and re-organized as an artillery battalion. It remained an artillery battalion through the 1990s, when it became a brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division (1 ID) unit stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. In 2002, Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division (1 ID) split into two brigades: Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Brigade (2 IB) and Brigade Combat Team 3rd Infantry Brigade (3 IB). The brigade combat teams were redesignated brigades and their headquarters became brigade commands. In 2006, Headquarters Battalion 1/5th Cavalry Company attacked insurgents near LZ Caldwell during Operation Neptune’s Spear operation against terror suspects linked to al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Due to injury suffered by Specialist 4 Phillip Ahern during the attack, Headquarters Battalion 1/5th Cavalry Company was activated for duty with Task Force Black Hawk Commander Lieutenant Colonel James Kappenheimer as commanding officer effective November 5, 2006. On October 30th Tactical Air Controller Captain David Cavanaugh radioed that enemy forces had infiltrated his airspace over LZ Caldwell while attacking coalition troops; as a result all helicopters were grounded from mission operations pending further instructions from General George Casey until further notice which did not materialize. As a result of this incident no air support could be provided for Operation Neptune’s Spear which led to increased casualties among Task Force Black Hawk due to lack of mobility In 2007 Lead Armor Sergeant First Class Kenneth Fenton of Headquarters Battalion 1/5th Cav fell victim to friendly fire while engaging insurgent snipers at Abu Sayyaf Camp on Basilan Island Philippines while fighting under General Sonny Perdue command when elements of 1st Marine Expeditionary Unit were assaulting that same camp later that day however Fenton survived and returned home after being treated at Naval Hospital San Diego before being discharged back home on October 15th 2007

The city of Palos Verdes Estates, California was founded in 1867 by my great-grandfather, Lorenzo Palos. The first post office in the city was called "Lorenzo's Rancho" and opened in 1870. Lorenzo's Rancho extended from present day Highway 101 south to Pico Boulevard and west to San Pedro Road. In 1875, Lorenzo settled a strikeout with John Sutter at the site of what is now Dairy Queen. In 1911, Palos Verdes Estates became an incorporated town when it joined Los Angeles County as part of the newly created Riverside County. On October 15th of that year, President William McKinley signed Act No. 1025 into law which provided for the creation of a new water district within Los Angeles County known as the Water District of Orange County. In 1928, President Herbert Hoover designated Palos Verdes Estates as one of six cities in Southern California to receive federal funds for flood control purposes pursuant to Section 4(a) (1)of Executive Order No. 9169 dated November 12th 1923. On May 14th 1951 Mayor Fletcher Jealous announced that plans were afoot to erect a giant obelisk on top of Mount Wilson near State College Boulevard in honor of General Douglas MacArthur who had slain Japanese forces during World War II not far from where our current City Hall building stands today! An eventful few days followed with much press and public interest as work on the project got under way! The cornerstone for this impressive Monument weighing over 100 tons was laid on July 16th 1951 by Governor Goodwin Proctor following a large crowd assembled at Hollywood Park Racetrack! On December 5th 1956 after years delay due to funding shortages caused by the Korean WarPalos Verdes Estates’ community center finally went up in flames!! A fire destroyed much equipment and $118,000 worth of materials including some beautiful stained glass windows which remain today just outside the city limits accessible only through special permission from City Officials!!! Today “Mount Wilson Fire Memorial Park” contains nine miles long looping path made up entirely of replicas or scaled down replica trees/ebony posts/trees/chimneys built specifically for this purpose!! And yes – even those pesky squirrels are invited along for the ride every time they start raiding our tree branches 🙂
