The Palos Verdes Estates Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the community since 1892. The station was founded by Captain John C. Sloat with a single boat and a crew of five. In 1915, Captain George W. Sawyer took over the coast guard station and increased its size to twelve boats, two helicopters, and sixty-six officers. The present day Coast Guard Station is one of the largest in California with an area of 246 acres that includes both land and water resources. The Palos Verdes Estates Coast Guard Station's mission is to provide essential Homeland Security services for residents of Palos Verdes Estates as well as other communities along the County Line including Monterey Peninsula, Marina del Rey, Pacific Beach, Encinitas, Seal Beach and San Pedro Bay. Through its law enforcement activities as well as its response to natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes, the station helps protect people from crime and danger on our coastlines. In addition to its role in providing law enforcement services throughout Southern California, the Coast Guard also responds to emergencies including: fires; search and rescue; vessel traffic control; coastal erosion control; migratory bird conservation; oceanography research; Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT) operations; oil spills/ releases from vessels/pumps/tankers/coal mines/chemicals plants etc.; environmental monitoring & compliance assistance for state agencies such as Fish & Game Enforcement Agency (FGEA), Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Parks & Recreation Department (PARKSIDE), Air Quality Management District (AQMD), State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) etc.; events like Presidents Day Parade or St Patrick’s Day Parade etc.; special events like July 4th Independence Day Celebration or Christmas Eve Celebrations etc.; training exercises for first responders such as firefighters or police officers etc.

In 1877, Palos Verdes Estates was founded by Spanish traders as part of Rancho San Vicente de la Bahia. The land that now makes up the city was first donated to the Navy in 1861 and later given to Captain John Sutter for his ranch Santa Clara. In 1875, Captain Sutter's son, George C. Sutter, gave two million acres (1,600 km²) of what is now Palos Verdes Estates to the University of California at Berkeley. The university set up a campus here in 1901 and named it Caltech after Mr.Sutter. The city has experienced many changes over its history- from a small town on the edge of Los Angeles County in the mid 1800s to an industrialized metropolis today with a population of over 120,000 people! Some of the most notable events in Palos Verdes Estates' history include: • The 1906 earthquake rocked Southern California and destroyed parts of Anaheim and Pasadena; • World War II ended with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor; • The City Council adopted Resolution No. 9 Geo Largo which declared December 8th as "Pasadena Day" in memory of all those who lost their lives during WWII; • On May 10th, 1959 Mayor Robert Fenton proclaimed Citizenship Day in commemoration of all Californians who had made their mark on our state or nation during that year; • In 1990 City Council Resolution No. 4 proclaims November 25th as "National PALO VERDES ESTATES DAY" in honor of all aspects associated with this rural community including artistry, agriculture and architecture
The Palos Verdes Estates community of today was first settled in 1849. The area now known as Palos Verdes Estates was originally a part of Rancho San Felipe, which belonged to Manuel Nieto. In 1851, the land that is now Palos Verdes Estates were purchased by Teodoro Molas and family. John Sutter arrived in 1857 and began developing the land east of Oceanside Boulevard. By 1865, Molas had built a large ranch house on what is now Estrada Street.
