Palos Verdes Estates is a city in Southern California, United States. The population was 56,651 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County. Palos Verdes Estates was incorporated on November 5, 1871. Palos Verdes Estates is one of the wealthiest cities in America and has been nicknamed "The Island City". The first people to live in what is now Palos Verdes Estates were Native American traders who traveled through this area on their way between Santa Catalina Island and points north. In 1821, Captain John C. Fremont discovered and named these areas Velasquez Peak and Rancho San Vicente de la Vega after Juan Manuel Velasquez y Costilla, an Spanish nobleman who had founded Mission San Vicente at Nietzvénimitl in 1781. In 1847, two brothers by the name of Willoughby built a house on Rancho San Vicente de las Flores which they called Villa Blanca (White House). By 1850, some 50 families had settled here and began building homes around a small plaza that became known as Plaza de Armas or War Gridiron because of its location near various military installations including Fort Sill and Fort Pickens. One major development took place during World War II when many Japanese-Americans living in southern Orange County moved to Palos Verde for safety reasons during the war effort; they left behind their homes and gardens behind them when they evacuated to inland areas such as Laguna Beach or Newport Beach. Today's downtown core was constructed following a plan developed by then-Mayor Marvin Ratner in the early 1990s which aimed to improve pedestrian flow through the heart of town while preserving old buildings along Main Street for use as office tower/residential complexes/shopping mall space etc.; however much progress has been made since then with new retail developments like Staples Center taking up most of downtown square footage while much older housing continues to be used for commercial purposes such as library operations etc.. The Palos Verdes Estates area was first settled by the Native Americans in the 17th century. The area was part of Spanish California until 1821, when it became part of the United States. The community developed around a large military base, Fort Mather, which was established in 1824. In 1850, the fort and its adjacent farms were sold to James S. Gilmore for $15,000. The Gilmore family continued to run the fiefdom until 1959, when it was donated to Santa Clara University.
