At its peak, Sutherforth Coffee had over sixty employees and sold over one thousand cups of coffee each day. The store closed in 1984, but its legacy remains strong today as one of the most popular and well-known coffee shops in town. Today, there are many successful businesses based in Palos Verdes Estates that continue to serve up high quality coffee products. Palo Verde Estates, California is a large city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 671,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County and the second-largest city in California after San Francisco. Palos Verdes Estates is part of the West Covina–Arroyo Hills Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Palos Verdes Estates was originally inhabited by Native Americans, including the Tongva people who were among the first to inhabit what is now Los Angeles County. By 1821, Mission San Gabriel had been built and Rancho palo verde had been acquired from José Antonio Delgado for $1 million. In 1835, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexicali land east of Bolsa Chica came under Mexican sovereignty and was named Rancho Palos Verdes; this included much of what makes up today's Palos Verdes Estates. In 1868, John Cahuilla purchased some uninhabited land southeast of downtown Los Angeles from José Gomez for $10 per acre; he named his new town Encino because he owned all but one corner (northwest corner). In 1870 George Hearst founded Hearst Castle on a hill overlooking Encino Creek; typical early 20th century architecture can be found throughout central Encino. During World War II much of Encino became an Army Air Forces bombing range called "Almirante Bay". After the war ended many homes were destroyed or converted into barracks or other uses such as schools and stores for soldiers barracks become popular again with families during post-war years until they closed around 1980 when military housing costs spiraled out of control resulting in their demolition/turning into luxury housing known as "The Alameda" Neighborhoods located just north of Downtown LA bordering Sherman Oaks to the west which are still mostly old army barracksites with no grocery store near them anymore

The city of Palos Verdes Estates, California was founded in 1855 by Spanish Americans. The community was named after the palm trees that were seen near the original settlement. The city grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1871, the City Council voted to become an incorporated town. On December 12, 1891, Palos Verdes Estates became a state capital and was renamed Los Angeles County. By 1910, the population of Palos Verdes Estates had increased to over 10,000 people and it began to grow rapidly again in the 1940s when war industries became prevalent in Los Angeles County. The post-war years saw a significant increase in development including golf courses and housing developments such as Reseda Gardens. As new residents arrived in Palos Verdes Estates they brought their own culture with them which has helped shape the character of the community today.
In 1868, Palos Verdes Estates was founded by José Antonio García and his wife, María de la Concepción. The García family had come from the province of Ferrol in Northern Spain. In 1869, José Antonio García opened a dry goods store on Adams Street in what is now the city of La Jolla. He also started a grocery store on First Street called the "Garcia Mercado." In 1870, José Antonio Garcia married Rosalinde Cline. They had two children: Eduardo Garcia and Marina García. In 1872, José Antonio Garcia died suddenly at the age of 53 years old and his widow Rosalinde took over the running of the store. She continued to run it until her death in 1888. In 1890, Eduardo Garcia became manager of the store and it continued to be operated as such until 1912 when it was sold to Angelico Reyes y Martínez who renamed it "El Supremo" mercado de alimentos y bebidas (The Supreme Store). It reopened in 1914 as "El Dorado" mercado local en el centro de La Jolla after being purchased by AIGA Holding which renamed it El Doradillo Mercenario del Sur California Incorporated (The Doradillo Market at Southern California's South Side). From 1916-1918, El Doradillo was managed by Francisco Moreno and then Jorge Sánchez before becoming management freehold from 1919-1927 by Almudena Carriles y Gomez with whom it passed into private hands again between 1928-1945 by Héctor Valdés Torres who renamed it El OrfeoMercado San Diego Incorporating all its former names including "Puerto Banco" mercados populares en la ciudad de San Diego up until its sale to Oriental Trading Company Limited Partnership for $1 million on October 1st 1945 On November 15th 1947, Puerto Banco merged with four other banks forming BankUnited National Corporation which changed its name to Commonwealth Bank Limited Partnership on December 15th 1948 effective January 1st 1949 On October 1st 1945, Oriental Trading Company Limited Partnership bought El OrfeoMercado San Diego from Héctor Valdés Torres for $1 million
