PALOS VERDES ESTATES, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 729 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern coast of Los Angeles County and is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The city's name comes from Spanish for "Island in the Pacific." The arrival of Europeans in Palos Verdes Estates began with Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico on September 3, 1817. In 1834 it was renamed after José de la Cruz y Costilla y el Hidalgo, 2nd Marquis de Palos Verdes, who had been Governor of Alta California during Mexican rule. On May 24, 1889, it became a town; on November 14th it became an incorporated city. The first Mayor was Rufus Noyes and the first City Council was chaired by John Paterno with Wm Clements as Vice Mayor The history of Palos Verdes Estates begins with ranching and farming operations by early European settlers starting in the mid 1800s. Ranching continued until World War II when manufacturing took over as key economic activity in the community. The Palos Verdes Estates area was originally part of Rancho Santa Margarita. The land that now makes up Palos Verdes Estates was purchased by Captain John Sutter in 1848. He named the area "Mountain View" because of the view from his farm above the mountains. Captain Sutter's family lived on the farm until1887, when they sold it to Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Hahn for $2,500. In 1915, Mr. Hahn donated a piece of land to the City of Los Angeles for use as an open space park known as "Mountain View Park". In 1919, Mayor James Sweeny appointed Drury Witherspoon as Manager of Los Angeles County Health Services with responsibility for providing health services to residents in Southern California's palos verdes hillsborough community including Mountain View Park and Palos Verdes Estates neighborhoods north of Interstate 5 and east of Harbor Boulevard (now called Ventura Boulevard). With Witherspoon's guidance, Sanitation Department workers began cleaning up areas near I-5 and along Ventura Boulevard which had been polluted by oil refineries nearby since World War 1. This work led to the nickname "The White Man's Paradise." It wasn't until after World War II that serious problems arose with air pollution caused by traffic in and around downtown Los Angeles from automotive manufacturing plants adjacent to I-5/Ventura Boulevard/Boulevard Airport located on former ranchland across from Beverly Hills High School (then Bob Hope Stadium) that city officials decided it was necessary to clean up these areas also known as The Great American West Side Cleanup Project or GAWS for short beginning in 1948 led by Director George Kuklick with assistance from Cleveland Amory who became General Manager later that year
The Palos Verdes Estates neighborhood of Los Angeles was originally formed in 1871 when the land between San Pedro and Venice Streets was purchased by Major George W. Smith from the Pico de la Roca Indians. The area now includes much of Downtown LA, as well as parts of South Central LA and Midtown LA. The original name for the community was "Palo Alto." A post office called Palo Alto had been established in 1877, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1870, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on what is now Pacific Coast Highway (now State Route 1) in what is now Palos Verdes Estates. In 1881, the city of Los Angeles annexed PALO VERDES ESTATES to its westward-flowing portion, including downtown andsouth central LA.
