The Palos Verdes Estates National Guard was first organized on May 14, 1914. The Palos Verdes Estates National Guard is a military unit of the United States Department of Defense and its mission is to protect the citizens of Palos Verdes Estates, California from terrorism and other threats. The first national guard members were drafted from residents of Palos Verdes Estates. They consisted of men who had served in the military or who had been adopted by a family member who did so. From 1914-1930, there were only 24 members in total. However, since World War II there has been an increased number of soldiers and civilians assigned to the guard because it has become more important to protect against terror attacks in Southern California. Today, there are over 700 members assigned to the guard as part of various detachments around Southern California. The Palos Verdes Estates National Guard is a branch of the United States military that has its origins in the 1849 California Militia. The unit was first organized as Company G, Fourth Infantry Regiment, California Volunteer Militia. In 1872, it was redesignated Company K, Seventh Infantry Regiment, California Volunteer Militia and then again in 1889 as Company G. On July 26, 1903 the company was reorganized as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion of the First Sergeant Major's Reserve Corps under command of Lieutenant Colonel John L. Sullivan. This battalion became part of the Ninth Brigade (California), First Infantry Division on November 1, 1910. On February 24, 1912 it was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (1st Brigade) of the First Sergeant Major's Reserve Corps with headquarters at Santa Monica Army Air Base; this battalion became part of Ninth Brigade (New Mexico), Second Infantry Division on May 15, 1916 when that brigade was activated at Albuquerque Army Air Base. The battalion remained at Albuquerque until late 1916 when it relocated to San Diego County where it served with Third Brigade (New Mexico), Second Infantry Division until October 1919 when it moved to Ventura County where it served with Eighth Brigade (California), Fifth Infantry Division until early 1920 when it relocated to Hawthorne Army Air Base south of Los Angeles before becoming a reserve unit once more on March 3rd 1920 inactivated thereon effective January 1st 1921 while still active within Ninth Brigade (New Mexico).

The Palos Verdes Estates, California area was first settled in 1853 by the Ohlone people. The area now comprising Palos Verdes Estates and parts of Newport Beach were part of Rancho San Vicente de Padua, a Spanish land grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza in 1785. In 1836, the portion of Rancho San Vicente de Padua east of palms was acquired by Major John C. Fremont for $2,000. The property became known as Fremont Place because it lay on the boundary between Los Angeles County and Santa Clara County. In 1868, when Pasadena was founded, a small community called Pasadena went up around Fremont Place. The name changed to Palos Verdes Estates after the palos verdes trees that line the streets in this area
