The Palos Verdes Estates Naval Base is one of the largest navy installations in the United States. It was established in 1911 as a small naval station on the southeastern coast of Catalina Island. By 1918, it had grown to include a large fleet of warships and destroyers. The base was re-opened in 1949 as the United States Navy’s main Pacific Command headquarters. In 1974, it became home to the 5th Fleet and its flagship USS Enterprise. The base has played an important role in American naval operations throughout history, and today it serves as a training ground for both military and civilian personnel. In 1897, most of what makes up today's Palos Verdes Estates were annexed to Los Angeles when LA became an incorporated city with a growing population. One reason for annexation was because of concerns about traffic congestion on Ventura Boulevard which led to plans for a new street grid called Central Avenue which would have connected all the neighborhoods within LA. The original Central Avenue designation never happened due to opposition from some of the neighborhood's residents who felt their homes could still be used without being connected to centralLA. Today, much of what made upCentral Ave remains but there are also several high-end developments such as Pico Hall and Vista del Lago which have been built on part or all of Central Ave since annexation including Pico Hall which features views over Downtown Los Angeles and Vista Del Lago where you can see Mt Wilson from across town

NHHC was established in 1978 as part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA is known for its research into advanced weapons and technology. In 1992, DARPA created the National Security Communications Foundation (NSCF) to provide support for maritime security. NSCF provides funding for maritime-related projects that enhance national security. In 1998, DARPA created the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to manage and operate naval systems afloat and ashore. NAVSEA manages a wide range of shipbuilding programs including destroyers, submarines, amphibious ships, aircraft carriers and other systems used by U.S. Navy forces worldwide. The history of naval gifts goes further than just supplying items to troops on deployment; there have also been donations of equipment or technology to civilian organizations as well. One such organization was the American Red Cross’s Disaster Relief program during World War II. The Red Cross donated millions of pounds of food, clothing, medical supplies and more to help civilians affected by disasters throughout Japan during World War II. After Japan's surrender in 1945, much of this equipment was seized by Japanese authorities. However, some pieces were smuggled out before being destroyed or melted down for their parts! After WWII ended there was a need for additional vessels that could be used in coastal patrols or search Andreson Strait missions off Canada’s coastlines(3). The 1962 US Congress allocated $148 million towards building nine nuclear-powered submarines called “SSBN Tupolev Talisman” – NATO member Bulgaria became sole owner after America agreed not to sell Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau any nuclear submarines due to his pledge not To develop nuclear weapons himself.(4) It wasn't until 1980 when Russia donated two Soviet SSNs - Admiral Gorshkov(5) and Tsesarevich Kuznetsov(6), which helped bolster America's submarine defenses against potential threats from East Germany.(7) Over time these donations have become something more often associated with special occasions such as Fleet Day or Victory Day! The Palos Verdes Estates is a census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California. It has a population of 545 as of the 2010 Census. The community was founded in 1887 by Italian Americans who had settled on the Peninsula after escaping religious persecutions in their native Italy. Today, Palos Verdes Estates is a bedroom community for Los Angeles County and its suburban sister municipalities of Rancho Mirage and Valley Hills. The first settlers were mostly men from Naples, Italy who had fled religious persecution there during the 1848–1849 revolution that toppled King Ferdinand I of Naples. Many of these immigrants landed at Santa Anita Pier on the bay near today's downtown Los Angeles; others disembarked at Point Coronado on Catalina Island. By 1850, about 100 families lived in three small villages: Pico Alto (the highest point within present-day Palos Verdes Estates), Villa del Rey, and Rancho Viejo de la Costa (now part of Valley Hills). In 1887, when Palos Verds was incorporated as a town, it included only Pico Alto and Villa del Rey; Rancho Viejo de la Costa was annexed to Mixcoa in 1912. In 1906 Mayor John Fenton established an amusement park called "Leland Park" west of Pico Alto village on what is now northwest corner of Ventura Boulevard and Oriole Road. This park became one of the most popular attractions in town with over 1 million visitors each year between 1906 and 1915. After World War I ended with Germany's defeat, American servicemen returning home brought new life to Palos Verdes Estates with their wives and children arriving until 1942 when all U.S.-born residents were deported during World War II because they constituted more than 50% of the population.. During World War II many workers from other parts of Northern California went to work in Leland Park as well including many women who did domestic labor for white male workers while also raising families……… In 1946 Leland Park merged with neighboring Valley Hills Village to form what is still known today as "Valley Hills Village"…. The original name “Palos Verds” may have been chosen because no one could remember why it was spelled incorrectly – Trumps said it sounded like “palooza”….. In 1951 City Council voted unanimously to change the name to “Palos Verdes Estates” after seeing an advertisement for this golf course that read “PALOS VERDES ESTATES GOLF COURSE TENNIS COURSE”….. Today much acreage has been developed into housing tracts but much Of historical significance remains such as Trumps Polo Fieldhouse where President Harry Truman played his final game before his death….. Other highlights include: Trumps Playground which includes two tennis courts side by side just east off State Route 187; Trinity Episcopal Church built 1889 within sightline OFTruman house;AND El Capitan Theatre which opened December 2nd 1941 starring Cary Grant….. Today PALOS VERDES ESTATES offers world class shopping opportunities including top tier department stores such as Macy's(Macy's)and Neiman Marcus(Neiman Marcus) AND high end boutiques such as Saks Fifth Avenue(Saks Fifth Avenue), Bergdorf Goodman(Bergdorf Goodman), Riccardi & White(Riccardi & White)....... Some residents commute into downtownLos Angeles or Malibu via private cars or buses…. However some commuters ride public transportation such as Metrolink Rail Line #1 which runs along Ventura Boulevard from North Hollywood through Downtown LA until MidtownLA….
The Palos Verdes Estates area was first settled in the late 1800s by European immigrants. The area became a center for agriculture, and began to experience population growth in the early 1900s. In 1911, the city of Los Angeles was founded on what is now the outskirts of Palos Verdes Estates. The city rapidly grew and by 1920 had become one of Southern California's most populous cities. By 1930, however, L.A.'s population had shrunk to less than 10,000 people from over 100,000 people. In 1932, Governor Herbert Hoover signed legislation creating the City of Los Angeles as an independent municipality within the state of California. This move effectively ended Los Angeles' decades-long relationship with its surrounding rural communities. As a result of this change in demographics, many small farmers and artisanal craftsmen left Palos Verdes Estates to find work in L.A., leaving behind their homes and businesses. Over time, these businesses have gradually regained some level of popularity and are now considered part of the community's history and culture.
