After years of planning and construction (the project cost $50 million), Palos Verdes Estates finally became an incorporated city on February 15th of 1959 with a population of 67,715 residents

It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen CwaAf) with hot summers and mild winters; average monthly temperatures range from 27°F (14°C) in July to 32°F (0°C) in December. The history of Palos Verdes Estates can be traced back to 1853 when John Sutter established himself as a farmer near Redondo Beach beach in southern California's San Gabriel Valley. He began growing grapes for wine while he operated his farmsteads along inland waterways that connected Pasadena with Central Coast ports such as Long Beach and Carson City; these waterways made it possible for him to ship his fruit directly into Los Angeles markets. By 1865 Mr. Sutter had built up three vineyards which he named Villa San Pedro de la Costa Riego after St., Peter's Fortress at Rome where he had been born two years earlier; these wines were popular among Europeans but not so much with Americans who found them unpalatable due their high alcohol content (about 30%). However over time American tastes changed radically towards lighter-bodied red wines produced without oak barrel aging or subbing sugar for added sweetness which soon became known as dry sherry style wines across America In 1872 John Sutter married Margarita Carrillo de Pacheco y Costilla whose father also owned a small rancho on what would later become called Rancho La Brera in Encino Hills near UCLA; this property Became part of US National Historic Landmark District #8792 on November 15th 1951 under Act 79-653). MrsSutter brought her dowry including an estate valued at $20 million dollars ($ million today) back from Spain - one of largest gifts ever given by an individual couple To United States! After marrying MrsSutter MrSutter moved from Redondo Beach into what is now downtown PalosVerdesEstates where he opened up a store fronting State Street between Fourth Street/Alameda Avenue & First Street/Euclid Avenue In addition he started developing properties within walking distance including Northridge Canyon Country Club which would become one of Hollywood’s most prestigious addresses In 1880 tasting room opened adjacent 2nd floor landing off “Main Street”

The area that is now Palos Verdes Estates was part of Rancho Santa Anita, a grant from Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve to Juan Crespí in 1847. The grant included 1,200 acres (500 hectares) of land east of the Santa Monica Mountains and west of the Ventura River. In 1869, Palos Verdes Estates became incorporated as a city. The population reached 50,000 by 1910. During World War II, Palos Verdes Estates played an important role in the development of the Navy's submarine base at Los Angeles Bay.
