After gold was discovered in California in 1848, settlers traveled to the area for their new source of income. In 1850, James Waddell founded what would become Waddell Ranch on present-day Ventura Boulevard. By 1860, more than 130 families had settled on the ranch, including several Pomeroy brothers who ran the largest cattle ranch in Southern California. In 1863, John Sutter purchased Waddell Ranch from the Pomersoys and named it Fort Moore after General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit that had fought at Battle Of Gettysburg two years earlier. Beginning in 1865, Palos Verdes Estates became home to one of America's first high schools when Mayfair School was established on present-day Hearst Avenue by Rev. Elisha Gray and Dr. Jepson Morse. Other earlyeducational institutions include Our Lady Of Mount Carmel High School (1868), Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church (1871), and Stonington Hall (1907). During World War II,Palos Verdes Estates served as a major labor center for munitions production at nearby Hawthorne Arsenal; many American servicemen were raised hereabouts and continue to reside today among local residents. In 1960, Palos Verdes Estates became part of newly formed Los Angeles County; since then it has undergone various transformations and growth throughout its history - becoming an affluent cultural enclave with prestigious schools and neighborhoods such as Beverly Hills and Bel Air available only to those who can afford it. The town of Palos Verdes Estates, California was founded on May 15, 1874 by Capt. George Armstrong Cranch and his wife Bertha. The town was named for the Palos Blancas vineyards in Spain. The first post office in the town was opened on October 1, 1878. In 1880, a school was built and the first teacher was Mrs. Fenton. On December 9, 1888, Palos Verdes Estates voted to become an incorporated town with a Mayor-Council system under the new state constitution that became effective January 1, 1889. The population of Palos Verdes Estates grew rapidly from its initial hundred residents to more than two thousand by 1893 when railroads were brought into the community and began shipping wine direct to Los Angeles
