The first American military forces in California were the 1846 San Francisco Battalion of Infantry, which was organized by General Alvarado. The battalion served in the Mexican-American War under Captain John C. Fremont and fought at the battle of Buena Vista on November 17, 1846. In 1850, the battalion was redesignated as part of the California Volunteer Infantry Regiment and fought in the Californian Campaign against Mexico during 1851-1853. On January 1, 1861, Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Meagher's regiment (the 9th Calvary) arrived from Sacramento to become part of Company F of First Division Ulysses S. Grant's army invading Oregon Territory. Company F became known as "Meagher's Own" and garrisoned Roseburg for three months before being relieved by Companies G and H at Battle of Willamette River on February 15, 1861. On January 8, 1862, a detachment from Company K (the 3rd Calvary) composed entirely of Native Americans led by Major Elias Ewing joined Grant's army advancing through Oregon Territory towards Thebes Junction where Union troops commanded by Brigadier General David Hunter awaited him. At Thebes Junction Hunter ordered his men to fire upon a group of Native Americans who had been sheltering within a small creek below and killed or captured most of them except for two young boys who managed to run into safety before engaging in combat with their attackers; this event is generally considered one of the largest massacres committed in United States history. A few days later on January 12 at Battle Of Rogue River some 315 men under Captain Augustus Hillirons including 100 Indians engaged in hand-to-hand fighting with 6 companies (1st battalion 2nd brigade) Confederate cavalry numbering over 1000 troopers resulted in 7 dead including Captains Robert Ewell Cobb and James Purdy along with several officers including Lieutenant Colonel John Wainwright killed or missing without leave while galloping back to camp after leading an attack against Confederate cavalry near Butte Creek Bridge northwest of Salem; this engagement is also generally considered oneofThe biggest engagements between Union & Confederate forces during The Civil War up until that time In 1865 when California became a state there were numerous volunteer regiments stationed throughout it both federalized units such as 1st Cavalry Division & 30th Infantry Regiment but these never saw action due to lack thereof volunteers compared to Army regulars
The town of Paradise is located in Kern County, California, about an hour outside of Los Angeles. The population was 8,000 as of the 2010 census. It is often considered to be part of the Hollywood Hills neighborhood. Paradise grew up around the filming locations for "Gone With the Wind" and "The Grapes of Wrath". In 1939, MGM leased land at 12600 Pacific Coast Highway for $800 per year from Cecil B. DeMille Productions and built a Universal Studios studio on it. The site would later become home to Paramount Pictures Hall and its associated condominiums. In 1951, MGM sold its interest in Paramount to American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). ABC then developed Paradise into one of the most expensive areas in Los Angeles County with high-end homes complete with private lives separate from those living in nearby Hollywood Hills or Beverly Hills. Today, Paradise still retains some aspects of its old production values including elaborate gardens and grandiose architecture reminiscent of Regency period English estates. Today's residents are mainly actors, actresses, model rocketeers and other show business types who have moved there because it's close toducers like Steven Spielberg or David Geffen who operate their studios hereabouts or because it's more convenient than L.A.'s many congested neighborhoods
