In 1848, the United States acquired what is now known as California from Mexico. The land was rich in forests and water resources and was perfect for ranching and farming. As the American west expanded, entrepreneurs came to California looking for new opportunities. One of these entrepreneurs was James Hance, who founded Hance & Co., a store that became a popular stop on the wagon trail between Sacramento and San Francisco. In 1851, John C. Fremont discovered gold near by at Sutter’s Mill. This led to an influx of miners into California and soon enough, the town of Paradise developed around this gold rush era activity. By 1853, Paradise had become a thriving community with businesses such as grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants lining Main Street. As gold prices increased in the 1870s and 1880s, so did Prescott Valley’s population growth because of its proximity to Gold Rush-era fields (which continue to be mined today). In 1886, Prescott Valley incorporated as a city under the name of Paradise while still maintaining its agricultural nature (with some monoculture crops grown today). At this time, it was one of several towns surrounding Yosemite National Park that were also incorporated into Yosemite City during this time period. The early 20th century saw significant changes within Prescott Valley as well as throughout Yosemite City due to World War I (1914-18) and II (1918-19). Large amounts of munitions were produced in both valleys; however, much of this production took place outside of either valley walls or within national parks like Yosemite National Park itself. This resulted in ammunition stockpiles inside both cities that quickly grew over time – eventually becoming too large for either town to contain without damage or destruction fromandals or weather conditions over time. Eventually though, both towns disbanded their incorporation efforts due largely to lack of funding/support from government entities like federal agencies or park management staff members themselves (Yosemite City continues its incorporation process currently). With no official governing body in place anymore – Prescott Valley slowly began moving back towards agriculture once again while Yosemite City continued developing into its current form today with housing developments along Highway 395 close by for Visitors seeking easy access to all things natural within our beautiful park!
On January 1, 1849, California became a state when the United States acquired it from Spain. The area that is now Paradise was part of Rancho Rincon de la Sierra. The first white person to inhabit what is now Paradise was José María Elizondo, who arrived in 1769 with his family from Chihuahua and claimed the land for Spain. In 1821, Juan Bautista Alvarado granted Rancho Rincon de la Sierra to Mariano Rivera. Rivera sold the ranch in 1847 to John Sutter, who founded the city of Sacramento on its lot.
