The navy deployed gift history in Paradise, California dates back to World War II. From the early days of the navy, when it was a small force stationed in San Diego, California, sailors have brought home army and airforce gifts. In 1942, the navy moved its headquarters from San Diego to Treasure Island and began accepting naval aviation gifts. From then on, the navygift history has been intertwined with that of naval aviation. One of the earliest Navy shipments to Paradise was a set of binoculars in 1944. The gift was sent as a token of appreciation for Naval Air Station Miramar's role in providing fighter pilots with training. Over time, other aspects of naval aviation have become central to the culture and heritage of Navy Deployed Gifted History units throughout America. In 1978-79 an exhibit called "A Century Of Gifts" included items donated by military members and their families as well as civilian friends and family members who had ties to the navy or Naval Aviation during that century. This year marks fifty years since that exhibit opened and we continue to appreciate all that our Sailors, Marines and Airmen have done for us over these intervening years!

There once was a place called Paradise, California. It was a beautiful land of rolling hills and clear lakes. And the people who lived there were happy. They had plenty of money, and they enjoyed their lives full of activities such as fishing, hiking, and spending time with family and friends. But then something happened that ruined all of this happiness. The weather changed so much that it became freezing cold winters, and hot summers. The people could no longer go outside because the temperatures were too high or because the ground was too wet. The only way to survive was to stay in their homes and eat food that they produced themselves. The people who lived in Paradise started to feel unhappy because they couldn't do what they loved anymore because the environment wasn't healthy enough for them to live in ADAPTATION OF PARADISE CALIFORNIA DOCUMENTS: PDF

Navy Deployed Gift history goes back to the early days of the Navy. The first gift given by the Navy was a spear. This was followed by a gunpowder mortar in 1664. In 1814, a ship's bell was given as a Naval present to Commodore Isaac Hull. The next year, an officer's sword and armor were sent as a Naval Present to Commodore John Rodgers. In 1837, HMS Beagle was gifted to the Navy by King George IV of Great Britain as part of the Royal Academy Award for Science and Technology (RAF). Since then, many other naval gifts have been given including masts and sails in 1865, submarines in 1908-1910, aircraft carriers in 1944-1945 and more recently warships such as HMS Queen Elizabeth II in 2008-2009.

The Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to send to friends and family. From small gadgets and tools to larger items like boats and jets, the navy has something for everyone.

In 1848, the California Gold Rush began. The miners and their supplies drove westward in stagecoaches, covered in dust and sand. In a few short years, they had discovered a fortune of gold and silver hidden under the hardwood forests of the Sierra Nevada. Many people lost their lives trying to find it- including one man named John C. Fremont. Fremont was an American explorer who traveled through what is now Southern California during the 1840s and 1850s looking for new routes to China. One day while on his way to dinner at a hotel in downtown Los Angeles, he noticed something shining in the distance and started off after it with his horses. When he got there, he found himself face-to-face with a group of Indians led by Captain Gabriel Moraga. Fremont recognized them as Mohawk chiefs from his time living near Fort Yuma on Arizona's Saguaro Coast. agreement was made that Captain Moraga would lead Fremont's party back home with whatever treasure they found along their journey, but when they reached LAX (Los Angeles) first things started going wrong: There were no trains then or anyone who could take them there so they had to walk all the way back! And when night fell everyone was exhausted from walking all day long; even Captain Moraga felt ready to give up when he saw Fremont's adobe ranch house sitting against the hillside just outside of town—he decided to chance it another day! The next morning, as soon as breakfast was over and everyone had dispersed for lunch nearby because no one could get any food past Sheriff Alex Young's blockade lineman stationed at both ends of town), Fremont heard shouting coming from downwind where young Deputy Marshal James Marshall was duty officer for law enforcement in that area; Marshall spotted someone running towards him yelling "I've got gold!" It turned out that this person must have been John Coady who’d seen some artifacts lying around while prospecting near Fontana about two weeks previous! After getting confirmation from local Indian scouts that everything looked safe again (the Panamint Mountains lay between them and LAX), Marshal ordered Young not to allow anyone else into town until more reliable authority arrived! So much for good government… General Kearny finally arrived about sunset with 5 Companies of cavalry only days later and Orderly Sergeant Charles Waddell took control without orders from above which resulted in much chaos inside town due mainly to lack of leadership skills among officers coupled with intoxication caused by overindulgence on wine bought at an auction held by Deputy Marshal Marshall! On July 29th 1855 Captain Gregg halted exploration around Independence National Monument following evidence brought back by Coady that rich deposits were located east/northwest of monument entrance!! For all intents & purposes this event ended Gold Rush era within 3 months!! < Less

On July 7, 1846, the California Gold Rush commenced with a shipment of gold nuggets from The Dalles in Oregon. On October 24, 1851, the first boatload of miners arrived at what is now Paradise Valley on the Kern River; they were led by Captain John C. Frémont. By 1862, over 10,000 people had joined the rush to find treasure in this area of Southern California. In 1864, General George Armstrong Custer was reported to have been lost in this region and his army was search for him unsuccessfully for two years. In 1868–69 a group of prospectors discovered Lassen Peak and named it after Commodore John Lassen who had commanded American forces during the Mexican-American War. This peak is also now known as Mount Shasta within the park boundaries of Yosemite National Park
