The Paramount Army Department was established in 1922 as a result of the merger of two separate military departments, the California National Guard and the Nevada State Guard. The new department was headquartered at what is now Old City Hall. It served as a branch of the state government that provided soldiers for local militias, law enforcement, and support functions during World War II. In 1945, following the war's end, the army became part of the newly formed United States Army and its headquarters moved to Fort MacArthur in Honolulu. In 1927, MGM merged once again with RKO Radio Pictures forming what became known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Incorporated (MGM/UA). In 1929, UA purchased MCA’s share in MGM/UA for $1 million giving UA control over all American films except those made by Fox Film Corporation which were still under RKO control. In 1937 Paramount merged with United Artists AGA (UAW) becoming part of Samuel Goldwyn Productions Incorporated (GDPI). In 1951 GDPI was sold to Republic Pictures Corporation which then sold it to Viacom Incorporation in 1967. In 1931, Paramount merged with the 20th Century Fox film studio. The merged company became known as the Paramount Pictures Corporation. The Paramount name originated from two pieces of land that were purchased in 1887 by the two brothers from a rancher named John Dickson. Dickson had been refused permission to build a school on the land because he owned too much stock in other companies. When the Hays family learned of this, they decided to use their connections to get Dickson's permission to rename his land "Paramount" after their own father-in-law, who had given them some of his land for Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles County. In 1929, when parts of Fox Films were taken over by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Paramount Pictures Corporation was created as a wholly owned subsidiary of MGM. With its new ownership came responsibility for producing all MGM Films outside of Broadway and Hollywood productions such as radio dramas and features (which continued at Fox until 1943). However, despite this shift in focus, Paramount still produced a fair amount of underwriter/distributor friendly programming such as slapstick comedy shorts and musicals through its production divisions until 1954 when it disbanded its animation division into United Artists Productions Incorporated (UAPI) effective March 1st that year due to antitrust issues with Columbia Pictures Industries Incorporated (CPI) which also held exclusive distribution rights for cartoons made by United Artists Animation Division until 1984 when those rights were bought out by Hanna-Barbera Entertainment Company (HBA). From 1951 through 1957 both UAPI and CPI were controlled by Walt Disney Productions Co., which gave Disney complete editorial control over all products released under its banner including both live action and animated features; this power would be retained through Buena Vista Communications System Incorporated's purchase of Touchstone Film Systems prior to their merger with Time Warner Bros. on October 15th 1998 resulting in Turner Broadcasting System being absorbed into Time Warner Bros.; however during these years Disney did release one live action Animated feature per year while Touchstone produced 3 annually across all divisions before eventually ceasing production entirely on August 15th 2006 coinciding with the release of Marvel's first full length theatrical film an all new directors cut version of what had been planned as an episode premiering immediately following Toy Story 2 - resultant in Touchstone suspending operations within Turner Broadcasting System effective September 25th 2006 having been unable or unwilling to meet production goals set prior to that date giving effect to newly established WB Home Video acquiring all Turner assets resulting in HBA owning 100% operating interests within Home Media Stores throughout America DVD service only available within those stores .
