In 1942, General Douglas MacArthur moved his headquarters from Los Angeles to here after defeating Japan in Emperor Hirohito's historic Accord code-signing ceremony at Zama Bayou on Guadalcanal Island. During World War II, Paramount saw increased production of munitions by both local companies and outside manufacturers due to its strategic location at the mouth of San Pedro River within easy reach of most naval bases around the world. After World War II ended, Paramount experienced a period of economic decline that led to a need for development assistance from state government agencies such as the California Regional Development Authority (CRADA). This assistance included creating new infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals and other public amenities needed during an era when growth had stalled overall throughout California. In 1952 CRADA teamed up with Lockheed Aircraft Company to create an aerospace industry center adjacent to downtown Paramount called Lockheed City Airport; this helped jumpstart what would eventually become one of North America's largest aerospace manufacturing industries. parallel growth occurred throughout much of south central Los Angeles County while housing prices continuedto rise throughout most of northcentral Los Angeles County until they reached levels similar or superior to those found in neighboring towns such as Culver City and Hollywood Hills by 1970s tabloid headlines proclaimed "Pinky Floyd has No Place Like Home". It is interesting that almost all these developments came about because someone coveted or needed an asset within walking distance: oil tycoon Sam Wyeth Garrison desired land adjacent to Warner Bros., movie mogul Irving Thalberg wanted a new home built on three acres he purchased near Mulholland Drive (now Century Boulevard), real estate developer Ray Kroc wanted access to undeveloped beachfront property just east of UCLA,[1][2] television personality Jack Benny wanted studio space next door on Screen Gems Studios lot[3],[4] etcetera... And yet despite this wide array of motivations few ever achieved anything more than infamy or notoriety; often becoming symbols instead memory/name recognition rather than substantive physical development or tangible impact on society as a whole like so many other civic boosters who have come before them...
