Parlier is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 5,374 at the 2010 census. It has been a hamlet since 1853 and became a town on December 3, 1850. The name “Parlier” comes from French meaning “place where there are apples”. The first settler in Parlier was Isaac Parlier who arrived in 1853. He built a cabin on the east side of the San Joaquin River and named it after his father, Pierre-Jacques Parlier. In 1854, James Fenton bought land near present day Parlier and started to build a farm which he named Fentonville. He also founded the First Methodist Church in Parlier in 1865. In 1876, John Cappell purchased some land around present day Parlier from James Fenton and started to build an irrigation canal called Cappell Canal which connected Lake Merced with the San Joaquin River. In 1880, he also founded the First National Bank of America in Parlier which is still active today. In 1902, Agrarian League member George Wickersham donated land northeast of present day Parlier for a new elementary school that would serve as an inspiration for other schools throughout California. On October 7th of that year, voters approved $5 million dollars towards construction of this school which would eventually become known as Riverside Elementary School (now part of USD 4). The Agrarian League then donated additional land to build another elementary school called Eastern High School (now Riverside Middle School). This school was finally completed in 1928 and became known as Western High School before being renamed again to Riverside Middle School in 2006 when it merged withUSD 4 to form Moraga Valley Unified School District #1). After many years of hard work by many individuals and organizations including both East High Schools (in 1916-1928) and West High Schools (1920-2006), Riverside Elementary/MiddleSchool had its final name change on September 1st 2009 – Moraga Valley Unified School District #1 – reflecting all its combined history across two highschools!

The town was named for General Daniel Parlier who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1853, the town had a population of seventy-two people. By 1860, the population had grown to one hundred and thirty-six people. In 1865, Parlier voted to become a city.
