They started growing coffee beans and selling them from their homes. Over time, other businesses cropped up around the area that served as trade stores and roasting shops for local farmers. In 1922, a small grocery store was opened by Mrs. Lillianne Eason on US Highway 101 near what is now the town square. It was here that people began to purchase ground Coffee from local farmers and bring it home to enjoy. In the 1940s, two men named inventor Ray Kroc founded Kroc’s Coffee & Donuts in nearby Hawthorne and started selling coffee throughout Southern California. This led to other businesses popping up all over the region with similar names – such as The Coffee House at 6th and Main (now an educational institution), The Java Joes at 9th and Elm (now closed), The Dutch Bros., etc. qualities that continue today through various incarnations including: Blue Bottle Coffee Co., Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Four Barrel Coffee, Dougherty’s Do-It-Yourself Grocery, etc. These companies have helped contribute significantly to Parlier’s Berberi heritage by providing quality roasted coffee products for residents to enjoy throughout the year without leaving their comfortable living spaces!

In 1847, Parlier was founded by Captain George A. Parlier and his wife Jane. At the time, it was the only town in Butte County. The Parlers were early settlers, moving to Butte County in 1837 from Oregon. They started a small grocery store and flourmill on the banks of the Feather River. In 1850, they built a large stone house on the hill overlooking their millrace for their family and grew crops and raised livestock until 1865 when they moved to larger quarters in downtown Parlier. The parlies ran a school from 1870-1875 before closing due to financial difficulties. In 1878, Captain Parlier donated land for what is now Cal State Northridge Agricultural College which opened its doors in 1886 with eighteen students and one instructor. The college closed in 1957 but has been reborn as CSUN's campus community since then. Captain George Aparlier died in 1915 and Jane passed away in 1925; both are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery near Butte City. Their children continued to operate the grocery store until 1950 when it was sold to J H Griffiths who operated it until 1984 when it went out of business again; it reopened as an antique store after thatclosed life cycle). One of Captain George Aparlier's grandsons continues this tradition today as President of Griffiths Antiques Incorporated (Griffiths Antiques) located at 515 N Main Street PO Box 92701 (www.griffithsantiquesincorpus ChristiTX 78702).
Parlier is located in the Inland Empire of California, about an hour and a half from downtown Los Angeles. The town was founded by George Parlier in 1872 as a small agricultural community on the edge of what is now downtown San Bernardino. By 1903, Parlier had grown to over 100 residents and was renamed for General John Pershing because of its proximity to his military base at Rancho Mirage. Today, Parlier is a small community with a population of around 50 people that includes many retirees and students who attend nearby University of Southern California or USC Trojans football games. It has a grocery store, bingo hall, post office, mosque, fire station, and several churches.
