Parlier is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 25 miles northeast of Fresno. The population was 1,214 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Norwalk micropolitan area. The town began as a post office on July 10, 1887, and was named for Julius Parlier, an early settler. The first store in Parlier opened in 1888. By 1900, the population had grown to 2 residents and 12 businesses. In 1907, Parlier incorporation was granted by the state of California; it became a city on May 14, 1912. In 1955, Parlier voters passed an ordinance providing for collective bargaining with the local unions representing local teachers and other municipal employees; this ordinance remains in effect to this day. In 1957–1958 (two years before Yosemite National Park opened), construction began on what would become known as First Grade School which later became known as East High School. The school originally served as a feeder school for parochial schools serving portions of eastern Fresno County; it officially opened its doors to students on September 9th 1958 According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau report,[2] there were 1,213 people living in Parlier when it included all of Fresno County and its adjacent townships except Coalinga and Menifee;[3] however,[4] according to 2017 estimates[5], there are only 804 people living within 500 feet (150 m) of any public drinking water source including 4 wells that serve no community during dry spells[6], so most residents rely either wholly or partially upon outside resources such as irrigation systems from farms or groundwater from underground aquifers
