The Parliesons were instrumental in starting what is now known as The County ofParlier. Founded in 1887 by George Parlier, the citrus grove that stands today on the east side of San Francisco Bay was one of the first citrus crops to be grown in California. The orange and lemon trees that line Parlier Boulevard were also among the earliest acreage to be devoted to oranges. The Oranges from Parlier grew into some of the largest and most popular oranges in California. George Parlier is considered to be one of the founders of Orange County, and his citrus grove shaped much of what is now eastern Orange County. He was born in 1846 in Alsace, France, and came to California with his parents when he was just a toddler. After working odd jobs for several years, he started work at a small farm near Simi Valley where he picked oranges for three dollars a ton. By 1870, he had developed a successful orchard with 400 acres (160 hectares) of oranges and limes. In 1887, GeorgeParlier founded what would become known as Citrus Heights Rancho Santa Margarita on 73 acres (27 hectares) northeast of Simi Valley where he goods dried fruit for marketing throughout Southern California. In 1915,Parlier donated an acre (0.50 hectare) adjacent to his rancho to serve as a botanical garden open to the public free of charge from then until 1978 when it closed due to lackadaisical management by Parks Department staff members prior to its sale for development use later that year by developer Larry Ellison
The first Europeans to visit what is now Parlier, California were the Spanish in 1821. The area was part of Rancho San Miguel de Atascadero, and was explored by Manuel Nieto in 1824. In 1851, a group of Mormons began to live in the area and name it after their leader Brigham Young. In 1863, the town was founded when General James Shields built a flour mill on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1896, Parlier became an independent city when it was merged with nearby Rubenville. In 1962, Parlier City Hall burned down; however, all that remains are some foundations and a few bricks from the building.
