However, despite these challenges, coffee continued to be a popular drink throughout much of postwar America. After World War II, different groups began developing their own unique approaches to brewing and using coffee beans. These groups include Dutch roasters such as Koffiekups and Kopi Luwak; Ethiopian brewers such as Habacat; Turkish cuppers like Bursa Tepe; Italian roasters such as Peet's; German grinders like Girodex; French cafés such as La Caffeinee Royale; American espresso machines called drip machines; Turkish instant coffees called Dosa Temsilikleri; Colombian coconuts called Supremo - all of which continue to make unique cups of java today!

In 1769, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was erected near what is now Old Pasadena for Franciscan friars under the direction of Governor Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Los Angeles County was formed from parts of Alta California. The population of Pasadena grew rapidly during this time due to immigration by Anglo Americans and Mexicans alike. As part of Alta California’s Mexican population increase, many people moved into Pasadena including José Altuve (the son of Spanish-American hero Andrés Altuve), Felix Rodriguez y la Maza (a landowner who financed Padre Junípero Serra's first mission to found missions along Pomona Road), Manuel Nieto (founder and first president of University City) and Angelina Jolie’s father-in-law John Geils Jr.. The growth led to problems with water resources; heavy development caused surface runoff that damaged streams and wetlands., In 1881 Measure V passed allowing for annexation by Los Angeles; Pasadena voted against annexation because it felt that its interests would be better served within the newly created city limits. However, annexation happened anyway and on May 25th 1881 becoming one municipality with a population over 1,000 inhabitants
