Pasadena, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 102,626 at the 2010 census. Pasadena was founded by Sephardic Jewish refugees from Spanish Lira in 1871. It became an American city on October 1, 1907, when it merged with nearby Santa Clarita and Huntington Beach. The first people to live here were the Tongva Indian tribe. They occupied present-day Pasadena from 600 until 14 April 1871 when they were forced out by Mexican soldiers under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. From then until about 1906, only men could own land in Pasadena; women did not have any rights until after Proposition 8 passed in 2008. The original town site was bounded on the north byooth of present-day San Marino Boulevard and on the east by what is now Montrose Boulevard (now Olympic Boulevard). In 1907, twoappership between Pasadena and Santa Monica moved its offices to downtown Los Angeles so that annexation of Beverly Hills would not count as part of Los Angeles County's population growth schedule. In 1916 Mayor James Sweeny offered to sell the eastern border of Pasadena to Southern California Edison for $1 million dollars which they accepted but never produced because their share of county government had already been bought out by Griffith Institute founder George Westinghouse (the university later built a college there). A group led by real estate developer Maurice Hirschman attempted to buy back Sweeny's shares but lost interest in 1925 and sold his assets to an investment company controlled by oil magnate Harold Ickes who leased them back to Sweeny for use as a research center for air pollution control devices he invented known as "Ickes Products." The property has remained idle ever since other than serving as a convenient parking lot for Ickes' new brand of automobiles during smog days around LAX airport during 1957-1964
