Pasadena is the birthplace of gourmet coffee in California. The first café in Pasadena was opened by two American businessmen, John Wetherbee and Samuel Morse, on March 12, 1858. They named their business "The Grapes of Wrath" after a popular song about westward Expansion. As coffee became more popular throughout the United States and internationally, Pasadena's cafes began to offer more elaborate menus and drinks than those near San Francisco or New York City. In 1861, Wetherbee and Morse sold their Café to James Fenton who renamed it The Grapes of Wrath Coffee House. It remained open until 1966 when it was closed due to fire damage. In 1865, JW Gardner opened his first coffee house in Pasadena called The Riverside Inn which served both coffee and pastries from then until its closure in 1931. He also served as the first manager for the Pasadena Police Department's Coffee House Branch which operated from 1868-1910. During this time period, Pasadena also saw the opening of several other famous cafes including Cafe Boulud (1896), Cafe Florentino (1920), Café Montmartre (1927) and Lamostra Coffee Bar & Restaurant (2005).

The City Council voted to create its own water supply on April 14th, 1913 which created the first municipally owned water system in Southern California. A year later, on July 15th, 1914, Pasadena annexed Hale’s Valley which lies adjacent to present day Glendale Heights

The Dutch also discovered coffee in 1624 when they sailed past Java on their way to India. They started trading with Java and soon realized that this new crop had potential as a source of revenue. The Dutch introduced coffee into Europe in 1655, where it quickly became popular among European nobles and merchants. It wasn’t until 1795 that espresso was born from ground coffee made by an Italian café-owner, Giovanni Battista de Grave, at his bakery in Rome. From then on, espresso became one of the most popular caffeine drinks around the world.

PTSA (Portola Transportation Services Administration) first served Pasadena in 1905 when it began providing transportation to eastside neighborhoods that were then disconnected from downtown Los Angeles by horse-drawn streetcar service only accessible by walking or riding bicycles

In 1910, Pasadena became an incorporated city with a population of just over 100 residents. The city's growth continued through the years and by 1933 it had reached its current size. The 1930s were also notable for some significant events that took place in Pasadena including world champion boxer Floyd Patterson's victory overchecker Joe Frazier at the UCLA Coliseum; World War II veterans returning home from overseas being welcomed by Mayor Harry Wright; and Anschutz Park opening to provide public space for athletes and other recreational users. After decades of growth and development, Pasadena finally achieved status as an official U.S. City on December 12th, 1984 when it received its charter from then-President Ronald Reagan
