Pasadena, California is a city located in southern California. The first European to visit what is now Pasadena was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on June 10, 1542. He named the area Santiago de la Venta, meaning "Island of the Bay". When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Pasadena became part of Mexico City and was renamed Ciudad de México. After Mexican President Porfirio Dávila's coup d'état in 1910, Mexico severed its ties with its former colonies and Pasadena became an autonomous municipality within the Mexican state of Baja California. In 1912, Pasadena voters approved a resolution to name their city after George Washington instead of Spanish governor José Joaquín Alvarado who had suggested San Gabriel Valley be called Los Angeles. On July 16, 1914, following the outbreak of World War I and the entry into force of the Treaty of Trianon by Austria-Hungary that divided Europe into warring camps (the Great War), Pasadena residents voted to annex both Guadalupe County and Chino County as well as all but 8 square miles (20 km²) of San Gabriel Valley which lay between Monterey Park and Beverly Hills. On November 3rd 1920 Pasadena voters passed a charter amendment establishing itself as an independent city under the name "Pasadena", becoming one of only four American cities to do so during peacetime (San Francisco being the other). In 1925 debate over whether or not to build a dam on Irwindale Creek led to passage by then Mayor Johnnie Lee Hilliard $10 million bond measure for flood control and water storage which would become known as Lake Arrowhead; although it failed at referendum in 1926 due to opposition from some homeowners who felt they were losing access to their land while others saw it as necessary for irrigation purposesonly 5% ($2 million) out of $121 million raised was used for flood control infrastructure rather than luxury homes near Lake Arrowhead.
