On November 6, 1886, cash payments were made to Mexico for 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land that lay east of downtown near Mount Wilson Boulevard and First Street (now Temple Drive). Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna granted title to this parcel to American George Hearst for $611 per acre ($2/km²). This purchase put an end to Spanish rule over what would become known as Alhambra because Hearst's grant went through Agustín de la Hoz y Menem whose forces destroyedHearst's holdings within two years
