It is located about 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Ventura and 5 miles (8 km) north of the mouth of the Santa Barbara Channel. The population was 3,035 at the 2010 census. The first Coast Guard station in Patterson was built in 1915 by Captain Harry W. Brownell and manned by two men. It was moved to its current location in 1923.

The name "Patterson" comes from the Spanish word "patricio" meaning "owner." The Patterson post office was established on December 12, 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 6, 1915. In 1907–08, W. H. Patterson donated land to make up what is now downtown Patterson. He also gave $5,000 towards the construction of a school which opened in 1909. In 1924, local entrepreneur Jules Ewing developed a new oilfield here that became known as Kern Oil Field #1 (KOF1). KOF1 produced an estimated 275 million barrels of oil during its production years- making it one of the largest such fields in North America at that time and one of the most productive ever discovered by man. KOF1 remain an important part of Kern County history to this day and are still being mined today with some operations lasting over 50 years! Downtown Patterson has seen many changesover its decades tenure as business district; including a fire station/police substation building completed in 1951 and designed by architect Edward Logue; several blocks of downtown retail space built between 1959 and 1984 as part of a Central Valley development initiative led by then-mayor Donny Hathaway; incorporation into City of Sacramento growth following Proposition 13 landslide victory in 1992;[2] reversion back to rural agricultural designation following enactment of Statewide Water Management Plan Amendments 2005;[3][4] redevelopment as modern light industrial district culminating with complete removal and replacement (in late 2017) of last remaining historical brick buildings on original plaza site facing Main Street – now home to modern day businesses including professional offices (eBay), vehicle dealership (Ford Motor Co.), restaurant (Pizza Hut), health club (Citrus Heights Wellness Pavilion), among others;[5][6][7] current plans call for extensive demolition/replacement within just few short blocks adjacent to Downtown area serving primarily commercial uses with limited public access sharing only limited vehicular access

A year later, Captain Thomas Yeates received an engraved gold chain from France as a gift for his services aboard HMS"Lively". In 1802, Acting Commander Isaac Watts received an elaborate silver crucifix from Emperor Napoleon I as a present for his distinguished service during the American War of Independence. In 1821, Commodore James Cook received an elaborately carved walnut-handled telescope from King George IV of Great Britain as a gift for his explorations along America's Pacific coast. In 1829, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter received a gold necklaces and earrings from Queen Victoria as birthday presents. The next year saw the dedication of President Andrew Johnson's Statue of Liberty at White Sands National Monument. In 1865, Commodore Samuel Willsreceived two pistols from European royalty as gifts - one engraved with "For the Union" and another engraved with "For His Majesty's Protection". During World War II, items such as radios and watches were donated by businesses or individual donors in order to support military efforts abroad while their owners were away on military duty. Many items found their way into museums after being gifted to museums by private collectors or museum staff members who had access to them through special privileges or arrangements made with museum management. In 1951, Admiral Hyman Rickoverreceived a model submarine (Noah's Ark) from Japan in return for allowing American submarines to patrol Japanese waters off Okinawa during World War II while Japanese submarines patrolled off our coasts unprotected! This event marks perhapsthe most famous donation by an individual not related to either side in world war II-and it came just weeks before Rickover was elected U S Secretary of Defense!

It served as an important transportation link between Stockton and Palm Springs. In 1907, Paterson incorporated as a city under state law. At that time it had a population of just 8 people. Patterson experienced its heyday during World War II when it became one of the largest towns in Central California for military personnel stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton (later Fort Irwin). After the war, Patterson started to decline as employment opportunities dwindled and crime increased; however, it has since regained some of its former glory with various businesses opening up within the last few decades including a modern hospital and several restaurants/cafés open to the public
Patterson was founded in 1884 by John and Jennie Patterson. The town is named after the Patterson brothers, who came to California from Ireland in 1853. The Pattersons were the first white people to settle in the area now known as Patterson.
