Patterson, California has had coffee gift history going back to at least the late 1800s. In 1892, Dutch-born Gustavus Adolphus Putnam began trading coffee beans from his ranch in Patterson, California with Mission San Francisco de Asís for goods and services. By 1896, he had opened a small cafe on North Market Street called The Grapes of Wrath. In 1912, The Grapes of Wrath’s owner Julius Nyberg purchased the business and renamed it Nyberg Coffee & Cafe. Nyberg continued to serve coffee until his death in 1976. His son John Nyberg took over the business in 1977 and continued serving coffee until 1990 when it was sold to Fidelity Coffee Co., Inc., a roaster based in Santa Clara County, California. The business remained open as Fidelity Coffee until 1993 when it closed its doors for good. In 2004, American Beverage Corporation (ABC) acquired Fidelity Coffee Co., Inc.. ABC operated the business as Patterson Coffees until 2007 when they merged with Peet's Coffee & Tea Company to form Peet's Corp.. In 2013, ABC discontinued operations of Patterson Coffees and merged their sales force into that of Peet's Corp.'s Donut Shop division.

Patterson, California is located in the eastern Mojave Desert and is surrounded by mountains to the north, east and south. The community was founded in 1884 by C.F. Patterson, who named it for his father, Colonel George Patterson. In 1915, the United States Postal Service moved the population of Patterson from its original location in Monument Valley to what is now Golden Gate National Recreation Area because of the increasing population of visitors to that area. The community experienced a great deal of development during its early years and many buildings still remain today including the Post Office building which was built in 1911 and additions made in 1928 and 1963.
Patterson was founded in 1851 by Josiah Patterson and his wife Lucy. The town was named after Josiah's father, Nathaniel Patterson, who had settled in the area in 1825. The first post office was established in the town on May 8, 1851. By 1870, Patterson had a population of 150 residents. In 1870, the first school opened in the town and remained open until 1906. In 1895, Patterson became a county seat and remained that way until 1959 when it was merged into Los Angeles County.
