The current incarnation of Patterson Coffee Roasters began operations in 1984, and their mission is to provide quality roasted coffee to consumers throughout the region. Patterson’s origins can be traced back to 1846 when Joshua S. Patterson located a small farmers market near his farmstead on Umatilla Road. With a limited selection of goods available from local businesses, Patterson decided to start his own business selling coffee beans direct to customers. In 1922, he opened the first commercially licensed roasting plant in central California. Over the years, Patterson Coffee Roasters has developed a strong reputation for providing high-quality coffee beans at an affordable price point. Their product can be found throughout central California, as well as Nevada and Arizona. In addition to their retail store locations and online presence, they also operate two laboratories which test different strains of coffee for purity and flavor consistency.

The land that makes up Patterson was first surveyed in 1867 by George A. Smith and named for J. S. Patterson who had been a surveyor on the Rancho Santa Anita Mexican Land grant which included what is now Patterson. In 1877, John Sutter arrived in America from England with his family and bought 1/3 of Rancho Santa Anita from Mexico for $5,000 . Patterson is a small town in the Inland Empire of California, located about 25 miles north of San Bernardino and 23 miles east ofOntario. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. Patterson has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was founded as a stage stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The post office was moved to its present location in 1865. In 1892, Patterson became an incorporated village and in 1924 it became an unincorporated community. The Patterson Manufacturing Company was founded in 1903 by Hiram Patterson and his brother-in-law, George Wagoner. It operated two steel mills until 1982. The mill closed after producing just over 1 million tons of steel products annually. The company also manufactured appliances, including refrigerators and freezers, until 1984. Today, parts of the mill buildings still stand along with some other older structures including a train depot which served as the company's administrative headquarters from 1923 to 1925 and served as a school for children up to the age of 16 from 1927 until 1951; three churches (First Presbyterian Church, Methodist Episcopal Church & United Brethren Church), one library (John Fennimore Library) and one cemetery are located within walking distance of the town center. Patterson is home to many notable residents including educator Don Edwards who taught at Edison High School before moving on to UC Berkeley where he became chancellor; businessman Harry Chandler who started his own manufacturing business that produced radios and TVs; author Toni Morrison who wrote her first novel here; actor/director James Stewart who starred in several local productions during his years living in Patterson before moving on to Hollywood; singer Dionne Warwick whose father owned a textile company near Patterson that supplied Warwick with exclusive clothing brands
