Patterson is well known for its agricultural crops and cattle, but it also has a rich history that can be found in local businesses and institutions. The first people to live in Patterson were the Ohlone people who hunted and gathered food near the present day town. In 1847, Englishman John Cranch discovered oil shale near Patterson and began prospecting for oil. When his discovery was made public, many men from Patterson came to see what all the fuss was about. By 1850, there were over 100 towns in Kern County having namesakes such as Pahrump (1851), Midway (1852), Northville (1853), Red Bluff (1854), Saugus (1855), Lodi (1856), Patrick Henry (1857) and Christmas Valley (1901). It wasn’t until 1881 that a hotel called the Golden Spike Hotel was built on Main Street in downtown Patterson by E H Myers. It became one of the most popular tourist destinations in central California because of itsote-setting Diamond Head Peak close by. The hotel continued to be used through several fires before being finally renovated and reopened as a bed & breakfast inn in 2014. As an institution, Patterson Market has been offering fresh produce since 1886 when it opened as an open-air market on Front Street between Third and Fourth Streets which then served as a center for local merchants selling their products to tourists from throughout central California . Today, Patterson Market still features hands-on activities likeorganizing farmers' markets from morning to evening every Saturday during peak shopping hours; selling locally sourced ingredients; hosting art exhibits; participating in summer festivals; and more .

It covers an area of 557 square miles and has a population of over 315,000 people. Patterson was founded in 1879 by John C. Patterson as a small community on the Sacramento River. In 1907, Patterson became part of Nevada when that state was created from parts of both California and Arizona. The town experienced significant growth during World War II as military personnel and their families moved into the area for work in mines and factories. By 1960, Patterson had become one of the most populous cities in Nevada with over 100,000 people. After years of declines in population and economic activity, Patterson saw some resurgence during the late 1990s as a result of new development around its downtown core.

The Patterson family owned a Rancho de las Pulgas, a ranch that stretched from the city of Los Angeles to the town of Hawthorne. In 1901, the Pattersons sold their ranch to Henry Hutton. In 1907, Hutton built the first hotel in what is now downtown Los Angeles. In 1918, he donated land for the construction of USC's then-largest building - the Academic Building. In 1925, he donated land for LA City Hall which still stands today on South Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles. In 1932, Hollywood film producer Harry Cohn donated $5 million to finance the development of Hollywood Park which includes such stars asClark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. The park was eventually renamed after Cohn in 1948. Hutton died in 1951 and his son Bruce Hutton took over management of his father's businesses including USC until 1962 when UCLA took control of it due to funding cuts by Governor Ronald Reagan. Bruce Hutton died in 1978 and his daughter Beverly Hutton became managing director emeritus at UCLA Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton Junction., NJ
