In 1881, the Pattersons erected a small log cabin on the corner of First and Highland Streets. By 1902, the town boasted a grocery store and post office. The Patterson family operated this business until 1978 when it closed due to economic troubles. In 1901, the Patterson family donated land to build what is now Pacific Gas & Electric Company headquarters building. This structure became known as "The Old Home Place."

In 1870, Patterson became an incorporated city when its citizens voted to secede from San Joaquin County. By 1910, the population had grown to over 150,000 and the city proper had outgrown Patterson. On July 16, 1916, the U.S.'s 10th Infantry Division moved into Patterson after liberating it from Spanish forces during World War I; this encouraged further development in what would become one of California's most populous cities. Today, Patterson is home to a variety of businesses including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America), technology companies (IBM Corp., Dell Inc.), healthcare providers ( Kaiser Permanente Medical Center), manufacturing plants (Alumex Corporation), as well as professional athletes (NFL players Michael Vick and Tom Brady). The city also offers a variety of cultural attractions including an art museum (the University of California at Berkeley Museum of Art) and two performing arts venues: The Live Arts Theater Company and Academy Theatre Company; both are located in downtown Patterson.

Patterson is a small town in Northern California, located about an hour west of Sacramento. It was founded in 1851 by James Patterson and his wife, Martha Jane. The Pattersons were the first white settlers in what is now Patterson County. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its location at the junction of two wagon routes that connected the Gold Rush settlements of San Francisco and Sacramento. By 1870, Patterson had a population of 350 people. In 1871, James Patterson died suddenly from a heart attack while out prospecting for gold near Redding. His widow continued to live in Patterson until her death in 1912. In her memory, the town erected a monument to him at Main Street and US Route 395 (now US Highway 50). In 1916, Patterson was renamed Johnstown after fellow pioneer John A. Johnston. The Johnstown-Johnston Dry Goods Store burned down in 1922, damaging much of downtown Johnstown; this event helped spur the construction of the new downtown courthouse and other public buildings that remain today. The store reopened as an antiques store soon afterward. In 1949, Patterson became part of the newly created Sacramento metropolitan area; it has since grown into one of Northern California's most populous cities with over 2 million residents. Today, Patterson is home to several important local businesses such as Apple Inc., Verizon Communications Headquarters (VZ) and dozens of smaller companies
