In 1914 they built a railroad station on theranch line between Atascadero and Lancaster. The town grew rapidly thanks to agriculture, ranching, and tourism; it had two hotels by 1940 and six by 1960. By 1990 the population had shrunk to 1,971 due to commuting into nearby cities or other states. Thanks to new transportation connections—the completion of Interstate 10 in 1965 made Patterson easy access to larger urban areas—the town has regained some growth over the past few years; its population now stands at 2,090. There are several interesting aspects about this small community that make it stand out from other desert communities: 1) There is no water available in most parts of town so citizens must bring their own drinking water containers or buy it from local retailers; 2) The only grocery store opened intown was a convenience store called "The Giebler" which closed down in 2013 but still remains standing as an museum open to the public; 3) All businesses were built before 1978 so there are many old-fashioned architecture features typical of early America towns such as corrugated roofing and adobe walls; 4) One street has been completely renamed after former Mayor Jack Kiley (1928-2010); 5) Many residents are descendants of pioneers who came to California during Rancho San Diego's heyday including ranchers Edmond Schieffer (1868-1927), Leonard Madden (1884-1963), Harry Heineman (1895-1971), Morris Weisman (1910-1981), Clifford Olson (1920-2005), Clyde Beers (1924-2009).
