The National Guard of the United States of America is a grass-roots paramilitary organization that was activated in 1946. The National Guard has been present in various states throughout the country, and even internationally. Each state has its own unique history with the National Guard, and Patterson is no exception. Patterson was originally part of the Mexican territory of Baja California. On November 14, 1848, American forces invaded Mexico and were successful in conquering Baja California under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The Adams-Onis Treaty recognized U.S. control over all of Baja California as well as portions of Sonora and Chihuahua; these areas became part of what is now Arizona Territory. In 1850, American settlers began to arrive in Patterson from eastern California; many men had served in the Mexican Army during the Mexican Revolution (1810-1848). In 1853, when Baja California was reado under Mexican rule once again, it became an American territory again according to the Adams-Onis Treaty which left most people from eastern California behind including some who had settled in Patterson specifically for this purpose (Dixon 1979). In 1861, American soldiers led by Colonel Augustus Gibbons burned down a school on US Highway 95 near present day Fillmore Street to prevent Native Americans from learning how to read or write which interfered with their efforts to gain land ownership (Huehner 1960). This event is considered one of the earliest examples of violence against native people by white settlers in America (Walsh 2008). Between 1852 and 1862 there were also several skirmishes between United States troops and local Pima Indians resulting in three dead Americans along with two wounded(Bennett 1990). In 1863 General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry unit attacked a detachment numbering ninety Pima Indians at San Vicentepec Mission near present day Cottonwood Road south side(Kramer 1953). Three members of Custer's unit were killed including his riding instructor() after an intense battle that lasted around four hours.(Langston 2009) This particular engagement made headlines across North America due to its brutality and added fuel to antiwar protests against Ulysses S Grant during his presidency (). It later emerged that only five horses outrider () died during this engagement while fourteen others were captured or taken prisoner (). Aftermath: The Indian Massacre at San VicentepecMission The following year on October 30th 1865 General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry Unit fought another Battle at San VicentepecMission where 3 Pima Apaches () were killed (), 2 Wounded (), & 1 Captured (). Aftermath: At least 8 Horses Died & Over 20 Werecaptured

The Patterson National Guard was organized on November 14, 1907. The unit was originally called the California Volunteers and their first commander was Captain John S. Smeaton. The unit was redesignated the California National Guard on December 1, 1912 and its first lieutenant colonel was George W. Troup. In 1916 the regiment became an Artillery Regiment and its first major General John H. Pershing named it the Patterson Infantry Regiment in honor of General George Washington Patterson who had served as commanding general of American forces in Mexico City during World War I. On October 15, 1927, the regiment became a Cavalry Regiment with Colonel James P. Hogan as its first colonel and it is currently headquartered at Fort Irwin Army Base in Simi Valley, California where it has been stationed since 1957
Patterson is a small town in Northern California, located about an hour north of San Francisco. It's a small community that has held onto its traditions and culture for over sixty years. The Patterson School District is one of the most active in the state, and their students have been known to help start schools in other towns throughout California. The name "Patterson" comes from two things: Patience and Fates. The town was named for Major General George H. Patterson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as commander of Rancho Susana during the Cuchumatán Gold Rush of 1849-1850. In 1868, he sold his land to local farmers and renamed the town Patterson after himself. The surrounding countryside was used for farmland until 1928 when Patterson became home to the world's first air force base - United States Air Force Station Patterson (later changed to Griffiss AFB). The station played a major role during World War II, providing air cover for coastal communities such as San Francisco and Sacramento. After the war, Patterson saw modest growth until 1990 when it experienced its biggest population growth since 1920 when there were over 60 people living in the village center alone! Today, much of what made Patterson so unique has disappeared with only a few remaining buildings from its early days: Main Street still features hardwood floors that were popular at the time; three saloons remain open today serving everything from moonshine to beer; and several cemeteries offer interesting insights into life here during those years (e.g., one graveyard holds tombstones from both sides of the battle between American Indians AND Ulysses S Grant!).
