When the United States Air Force stationed its first squadron of airplanes in Perris, California in World War II, it was a momentous occasion. Roosevelt awarded the first order for Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jets to General Curtis LeMay on December 15, 1941. Perris, California is a small town in Riverside County, California. The population was 20,000 as of 2000. It is the only incorporated community in the county. The Perris Unified School District serves most of the town and its five villages: Alhambra, Arroyo Grande, Bruin Lake, Claremont Hills, and Pico Rivera. The first Europeans to visit what is now Perris were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Hernando de Soto on their way from Mexico City to explore Santa Catalina Island in 1542. A mission was established there by Father Junipero Serra in 1769. In 1821 Perris became part of Mexico when Californias acquisition of that state was formalized via the Mexican-American War (1846-48). It wasn't until after World War II that people began moving into the area around present day Perris from Riverside County and other parts of Southern California because of good farming land available hereabouts for growing crops orchards, vineyards and other agricultural pursuits such as poultry raising. Postwar growth has continued with Hispanics coming to work in mills and factories while white residents have gradually moved out or left for various reasons such as health concerns about air pollution or natural disasters such as earthquakes which have struck this rural corner of Northern California often times hard times due to changing weather patterns. The 2010 U.S Census counted 21,429 people living in Perris; 8% more than it had counted two years earlier but 1% less than it had counted in 2000 (). The racial makeup of Perris was 83% White trash Hispanics (), 9% African Americans (), 5% Native Americans (), 2% Asians (), 1% Pacific Islanders ().

Perris, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by Kern County to the east, Riverside County to the south, and Mono County to the north. The population of Perris was 20,047 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Spanish for "place where people plant grapes." In 1853 a group of settlers from northern Mexico founded what would become Perris after reaching California on horseback through central Yuma Desert. The first post office in Perris opened in 1856. In 1872 a school was built and named after Mrs. Auld who donated land for it. This school closed in 1932 but was reopened as an adult daycare center in 1978. In 1912 a millrace became available for irrigation and development as well as housing for farmers near present-day City Park across from downtown Perris. In 1916 James Waugh (1865-1933) discovered oil while prospecting near present-day Chino Hills; this led to Rancho Bernardo being developed adjacent to Waugh's production area which included most of today's city of Perris along with smaller communities around it such as Menifee and Blackhawk Heights. As oil prices rose during World War I, production increased at Bernardo until 1915 when government regulation halted production due to antitrust concerns; however, normalcy returned by 1918 when new drilling rigs were brought into play following World War I shortages of conventional resources. During the 1920s and 1930s several mills went out of business due primarily to lack of demand or competition from modernizing agriculture technology; however, some continued operations until abruptly closing during WWII due largely to low Prices Of Oil (POP). During World War II perristal seals were used on ammunition dumps throughout Southern California because they could not be exposed without war damage or sabotage attempts; these dumps are now part of history thanks to efforts by locals interested in preserving them including members of the Orange County Historical Society which restored one such dump at Point Loma Naval Shipyard between 1984-1987 while also restoring two others at Santa Ana Naval Station between 1986-1992.). Today there are also museums associated with various aspects related specifically to military installations operated by DoD within or nearby Orange County including Fort Huachuca Museum District off Interstate 5 just outside Ofrenda Canyon Road about 8 miles northeast von Heyden Drive between Antelope Valley Rd./Golf Course Rd./Lake Mohave Dr./Fort Huachuca Rd., Off I 5 exit 190 milepost 72320 inside park boundaries
In 1851, the first post office was established in Perris. The townspeople were successful in marketing their new community because they had a good location and an excellent water supply. They also built a few churches and other civic buildings. The population of Perris increased rapidly from its initial handful of residents to over 1,000 by 1860. In 1872, the railroad arrived in Perris and made it easier for people to get around. This also led to more businesses opening up, which helped Toombsville become a thriving community. During World War II, many people worked on the construction of military bases in nearby Kern County. As a result, Perris saw an increase in business growth and population growth during the war years. However, by 1945, most of the wartime factories had closed down and Perris's economy had begun to decline again. Businesses started closing down all over California during the postwar period; however, Toombsville continued to thrive thanks to its strong social traditions and volunteerism.
