The Coast Guard has been in Perris, California since 1923. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the coastline and maritime safety. The Coast Guard also provides law enforcement and disaster relief services. In 1923, the Perris Post Office was established as a result of an act of the California Legislature. In 1931, the Coast Guard station in Perris was relocated to its present location on Elm Street. In 1935, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was formed and began providing support to the Coast Guard. The first military unit assigned to Perris Station was a United States Marine Corps detachment sent to help with defense against Japanese attack during World War II. In 1951, the Perris Post Office became an auxiliary letter carrier service with mail delivery being handled by private individuals until 1975 when it became part of United Parcel Service (UPS). On September 1, 1976, UPS purchased a controlling interest in American Mail Corporation which then merged with US Postal Service to form USPS. On November 1, 1978, USPS took over operation of all local post offices including those within city limits and moved their Fleet Management Center from San Diego into downtown Perris. On January 20th 2000 USPS announced that they would close all UPN post office locations effective February 15th due to budget cutsbacks caused by 9/11 terrorist attacks which had devastating effects on postal service delivery across America resulting in package delays for consumers and significant financial losses for UPS and USPS

The Perris post office was established on July 1, 1888. The first deputy sheriff of Kern County, Hiram Pogue, served as the first postmaster until 1893 when he became the first mayor of Perris. From 1903 to 1912 Mayor Harry Gooden served as the only mayor; he was succeeded by his brother-in-law John Davenport after they both died in office at the age of 70 years old. In 1912 peris incorporated as a Village and changed its name to Perris on July 1st of that year with the help of local citizens who ratified the change at a meeting held at Citizens Clubhouse). On November 15th, 1916 Captain George W. Smith's grandson James Hogg was elected President pro tempore (a position equivalent to today's Vice President) over incumbent Warren Atherton because Hogg had more votes from members of the board In 1947 Captain George W. Smith's great granddaughter Barbara married Captian Donny Lnighbors and moved to Perris with him which has led to increased tourism in this small town where things like concerts and visitors center have been created over time

The first human settlement in Perris, California was by the Hahamadon party on November 7, 1821. They were driven out by the Yuma Apache and their leader, Geronimo, who had been living in what is now Arizona.
