Perris, California is a small town located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. The population was 2,613 as of 2010. The Perris Valley is a narrow and steep-sided valley that runs east-west for about 18 miles from the town center to Indian Wells Regional Airport. The Perris Valley has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. The first mention of perris in written history is from 1847 when an American sergeant named John C. Frémont listed it on his map as "Perey". In 1868, Spanish soldiers under General José Joaquín de Arista discovered gold mines at Peralta and Comstock in what is now Perris Valley. Mining operations began in earnest around 1870 and soon production had created large quantities of lead and silver ore that were unloaded on the local rivers. By 1880, mining had caused extensive damage to the environment including streams and hills being destroyed; however, some new mills were built to continue production until 1903 when all but one mine closed due to pollution concerns brought about by heavy industry in the area. In 1907, developer Roy Bundy acquired 269 acres (120 ha) in what is now downtown Perris from Juan Castro who owned 4% of Mexican land comprising much of today's Riverside County. With access to limited water resources and no natural farming prospects available nearby, Bundy decided to beginning developing his holdings into a citrus orchard empire which would become one of Northern California's most successful agriculturists during its early years (see also: Rancho Santa Ana). Although high prices resulted from this venture – $2 million worth of oranges was sold between 1908 and 1912 – it also produced high levels of environmental stress including major fires that ravaged adjacent valleys statewide during those years (e.g., Redlands 1910). Although agriculture providedroughly 80%of GDP for Perris through 1928 ($10 million), after World War II its decline accelerated with declines in both employment opportunities along with falling commodity prices which led to increased poverty among families struggling on incomes less than $5 per day by 1970 (UAW Local 921 campaign report). However, despite these difficulties growing community efforts have successfully revived economic vitality throughout recent decades through such initiatives as arts & culture programming/festivals; renewable energy development; educational opportunities; marketing & advertising services; agricultural research & Extension services; as well as important partnerships with other businesses/institutions within our local economy
On July 4, 1851, the first post office in Perris opened with six mailbags. The town was named for Captain John F. Perris who had purchased land east of the mission on which it now stands. A sawmill and grist mill were built in 1854, and a store was built in 1855. In 1865, the California Central Railroad reached Perris by way of Palmdale. In 1886, an oil well was drilled in what is now downtown Perris and soon after, a hotel and business district sprang up around the wellhead. By 1909, there were twenty-one businesses in downtown Perris with a population of over one hundred persons.
