Perris, California is an unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The ZIP code for Perris is 92553. The community is a small town of about 1,500 people and lies on the eastern edge of the Mojave National Preserve. It was founded in 1887 by pioneers who arrived from Southern California to homestead a rancho on the east side of San Bernardino Mountains. The name "Perris" comes from two Spanish words: perro (dog) and risa ( laughter). The first settler in Perris was Lorenzo Ramos, who arrived in 1887 with his family. His brother-in-law Manuel Martinez also arrived soon after and built a cabin around 1890. In 1897, another pioneer, José Garcia brought his family to Live Oak Canyon where they built a log cabin that still stands today. In 1908, John Sutter bought the Rancho de las Animas from Manuel Martinez and renamed it Rancho Perris. Over time, other settlers came to Bonita Valley including Jules Bemis in 1916 and Harry Burriss in 1950. By 1959 there were over 100 residents living in Perris with some 10 businesses operating along Main Street. In 1957, one of the first schools opened up in Perri when Missy Muller taught second grade at East Mountain School. A few years later another school opened up when Mrs.( unknown) donated land for use as a public elementary school which became known as West Side Elementary School until it closed down in 1984 due to budget cuts by then Superintendent Don Armstrong Jr.. In 1965 another school opened up when Mrs.(unknown) donated land for use as a private high school which became known as South Side High School until it closed down too also due to budget cuts by then Superintendent Don Armstrong Jr.. In 1984 both West Side Elementary School and South Side High School were closed because of lack of students so local parents formed the Northside Intermediate Unit District No 5 which operated Humboldt Middle/High School from 1984-1988 before that district was disbanded completely . The last school to open up within the original boundaries of Perri was Patriot Middle/High School whichopened its doors on October 26th 1988 after being purchased by Homeschoolers United for All Americans (HUAA) from nearby Tehachapi Unified District #3 . ThisSchool would eventually close down due to poor financial conditions but reopened under new ownership on November 16th 2006 back at home plate at Citrus Bowl Stadium competing against Cathedral Catholic HS (Lanham MD). On October 12th 2007 Home'schoolers United For All Americans successfully petitioned Kern County Superior Court Judge Jerry Keady not only to reopen Patriot HS but also all three schools within HUAA’s jurisdictional boundaries! The result meant that all three schools would be reopen under one roof once again!!
