Perris, California is located in the Central Valley of California. The population of Perris was 2,849 at the 2010 census. The city is named after Pershing County, which is located in southern California. The first Europeans to visit what is now Perris were Spanish explorers in 1769-1770, who named it San Marcos de los Ranchos de las Canoas. It was part of Mexican territory until 1848 when it became a US state and then a county within Californias metropole. In 1930, perris annexed part of Rancho Santa Anita from neighbouring Coalinga and this created an enclave of about 50 residents around the courthouse and schoolhouse on North Main Street. Today’s Perris was founded by George Hargrave in 1876 as an agricultural town on the banks of the Kern River east of Bakersfield. After years trading goods with Nogales on their way to markets in Southern California and Nevada,Hargrave opened his own store there in 1880 and started to develop what would become today’s downtown area with land he bought from adjacent farmers. By 1886 he had laid out four blocks northward from present day First Avenue between Second Street and Third Street; two blocks east along Fourth Street; one block south along Fifth Street (now Alameda Avenue); and one block west along Sixth Street (now Main). His store soon became known as The Gilded Age Store because its windows were lined with gilded mirrors lining the walls sporting large prices for groceries items such as milk, eggs, butter, bacon, flour & sugar etc., some marked up over 100%. In 1913 Charles Goodyear leased 160 acres northeast of downtown Perris from Hargrave for $1 an acre ($100/acre current) making him one of earliest developers in town proper – though Goodyear never built anything there himself but left his mark behind through naming streets after him including Goodyear Boulevard near where he once lived on East Seventh street - later renamed Arroyo Drive after him - while also leaving his stamping ground at NinthStreet corner(now Cottonwood Avenue) where Early American Tire still stands today!
