After being forced out of their ancestral land in 1849 by settlers from Mexico, these Mono people retreated into the hills around present-day Perris. In 1875, prospectors discovered oil reserves in what would become Perris. This led to an influx of miners and entrepreneurs who built mills and businesses around this discovery. The town's name came about when a group of men named it after a nearby ridge called "Ridgeline." While oil production declined during World War II due to scarce resources, it revived following the war as other industries took hold such as agriculture and mining. However, oil prices began declining in the late 1990s which led to a loss of jobs and a decrease in population size over time. However, recent growth has seen new development begin to take hold with investments into housing, retail therapy, dining options and parksland adjacent to downtown Perris which have helped contribute to its revitalization process. In addition, plans are under way for a new downtown district which will include more than 100 shops and restaurants as well as new public square space that will host events including cultural festivals throughout the year
Perris was founded in 1879 by James E. Perris, who homesteaded the land on which the city now stands. The city's first courthouse and jail were built in 1881. The city was incorporated as a town in 1907 and became a city in 1959.
