Polk became president of the United States and ordered that all public land be divided among his party's candidates for election to Congress. The largest grant went to General John Sutter for 806 square miles (2,498 km²). This area included much of what is now Kern County and portions of Riverside and Orange counties today. In 1912, citrus farmers began to arrive in Perris with their new technology called Moviola irrigation plants which allowed them to grow oranges nine months a year instead of three years as earlier methods required. Citrus farming became an important economic sector in Perris after World War II when dried fruit production replaced fresh fruit production as one of the main exports from the town.
